Let’s assume you’re a normal, good person, looking to add a kitty to your loving home. Why would you 𝙥𝙖𝙮 for one when they are all over the internet for free⁉️

I’d understand the temptation, but let’s break it down…

A paid adoption fee usually covers:
🔹 Spay/neuter surgery
🔹 Vaccinations, deworming, testing
🔹 Microchipping
🔹 Veterinary exams and treatment
🔹 Food, shelter, and foster care before adoption

It can also help ensure that the adopter is 𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘦𝘥 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘰𝘯𝘨𝘰𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘤𝘰𝘴𝘵𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘮𝘪𝘵𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 of caring for a pet.

A free kitten can absolutely become a beloved family member, but “free” at pickup will mean paying for all of those medical and preventive needs afterward. In contrast, an adoption fee from a shelter or rescue often means the kitten has already received important care and the fee 𝙨𝙪𝙥𝙥𝙤𝙧𝙩𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙤𝙧𝙜𝙖𝙣𝙞𝙯𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣’𝙨 𝙖𝙗𝙞𝙡𝙞𝙩𝙮 𝙩𝙤 𝙝𝙚𝙡𝙥 𝙢𝙤𝙧𝙚 𝙖𝙣𝙞𝙢𝙖𝙡𝙨. ✅ You are opening up more space for kitties to be able to get the specialized care they need.

When a free kitten is picked up, people rarely give a second thought to the mother cat’s circumstances. 💔 They may unintentionally be enabling the very situation that led to that kitten needing a home in the first place.

Taking one kitten home may change that kitten's life forever, and that's a beautiful thing. But if the mom cat isn't spayed, 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗼𝗼𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘀. In just a few months, there will be another litter needing homes, and another after that. 😭

So the question isn’t really “Why pay for a cat?” It’s often “What care and support has already been provided, and how can we help ensure more cats receive that care?”
