On September 9, 2017 my 17 year old son Nicholas Vero lost
his life to a riptide while we were vacationing on the Outer Banks of
North Carolina. It was our last day on our wonderful vacation and Nick
insisted that he jump the waves one more time which he along with
his brother and girlfriend had been doing all week. I sat on the b
each with his girlfriend watching Nick,
and our lives were changed forever. I was telling him he was out to far which was actually about his
waist but anyone who knows me knows I worry way too much, he told me to be quiet and he was fine. He just wanted 5 more minutes. Within a minute he was pulled out well past his waist and calmly
yelled for help. While his girlfriend ran to the house to get help I ran into the water and was knocked
over by a wave. When I got up I knew there was no way I could get to him since I really don't know
how to swim. My aunt, uncles, and cousin rushed into the water but we couldn't find him. My family
had to be pulled out of the water with one of my uncles being med-flighted and almost dying. 911 was
called, the local police were there, jet skis were out along with helicopters but no one could find my
baby. In literally 2 minutes my son was lost to the ocean. It actually happens that fast. The coast
guard called off the search at noon the next day and had very little hope that we would ever find Nick. As a family myself, my husband, and our son Nathan decided the best thing to do was to start our
long 14 hour drive home. On the ride home our journey as a family of 3 instead of 4 began. The tragic
news had already begun spreading through our hometown of Attleboro. Grief counselors were
already being set up at the High School as well as at our youngest son’s school. In the coming days
after arriving home the support from the Attleboro community was more than overwhelming. Food
was dropped off by strangers, councilors made house calls to Nick's girlfriend’s house to meet and
talk to all Nick's friends, councilors came to my home for Nathan, police patrolled our home while we
were at the funeral, Dunkin Donuts gave us food all week. The list goes on and on. Because of the
outpouring of support from our community my family and I decided to create Nick Vero's Super
Heroes. If you knew Nick you knew he had a heart of gold. In his honor we will give whatever we can
back to the community who gave us so much in our time of need. My family and I thank you very
much for taking this journey with us and hope you enjoy all the great things we do to keep our
superhero alive. Kindly,
Lindsey @ Nick Vero’s Superheroes
