On Endangered Species Day, we are reminded of the importance of celebrating, learning about, and taking action to protect some of Earth’s most vulnerable animals. One of the most recognized of these at Capron Park Zoo are Red Pandas, which are officially classified as an endangered species by the IUCN Red List, a program that contains the world’s most comprehensive information source on the global extinction risk status of species. Red panda populations have seen a sharp decline, and it is estimated that as few as 2,500 to 10,000 remain. Habitat loss, population fragmentation, and illegal poaching are all contributing to this decrease. Here we participate in the Species Survival Program (SSP) for Red Pandas, which maintains a healthy & genetically diverse population in professional care. Every visit to Capron Park Zoo helps us work towards conservation of this and many other species. Come visit Pabu & Suni soon and learn how they play an important part as ambassador animals for their species!
