The revival is happening in Ireland!

The reported 143% increase in weekly Mass attendance among young Catholics in the Republic of Ireland is a key finding from a March 2026 study titled “The Turning Tide? Recent Religious Trends on the Island of Ireland,” commissioned by the Irish Catholic Bishops’ Conference.

the percentage of Catholics aged 16 to 29 attending weekly Mass rose from 7% in the 2020–2022 period to 17% in the 2023/2024 cycle. This significant uptick, described by researchers as a possible "quiet revival," places young Irish Catholics as the sixth most practicing group in Europe.

The growth is particularly notable among young men and is also reflected in Northern Ireland, which remains the most religious part of the island.

On January 2, 1864, Archbishop John Joseph Hughes passed away. He was New York’s fourth bishop and its first archbishop, making a significant impact as a Catholic leader in 19th-century America. Hughes is well known for his efforts to support Irish Catholic immigrants, confront anti-Catholic hostility, and help establish Catholic schools and institutions in New York. An interesting lesser-known detail: during the early part of the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln asked Hughes to serve as an informal envoy to Europe. His mission was to dissuade European countries from recognizing the Confederacy and to aid in recruiting military expertise for the Union..

Nollaig Shona Duit.

A simple Irish phrase, but it carries so much more than just “Merry Christmas”.

It is the sound of home, spoken in kitchens, pubs, and front rooms across Ireland. It is said quietly, said with a hug, or shouted across a room full of family you have not seen in far too long.

Whether you are in the U.S.A., or Ireland or on the other side of the world this Christmas , this one is for you.

Buíochas dílis agus áthas síoraí.
Sincere gratitude and lasting joy.

From all of us at The Ancient Order of Hibernians, Division One - Atlantic County, New Jersey, may this Christmas bring a little bit of home, wherever you are.
