Today we remember the founder of the Atlantic City Historical Society, Philippina Halstead. This photo illustrates her fierce spirit. Centuries ago Phil’s family emigrated from Germany to Russia before eventually moving to South Dakota. Phil’s mother Christina grew up during the Great Depression and hoped each generation would rise above the hardscrabble life she had endured.

Phil chose Atlantic City instead, where she built a cabin and lived for decades year around without running water or electricity. Despite working as a registered nurse, she lived frugally having given away both time and money to friends and family over the decades.

She was well known as an artist (specializing in oil paintings, water colors, and encaustics) and as a historian. She wrote columns for the Wyoming State Journal, primarily about South Pass/ Atlantic City historical figures. She was the principal author and researcher for the ACHS Walking Tour. She earned her master’s in history in her 50s.

Phil loved the Red Desert and shared that love with her grandchildren. When she died in 2011 at the age of 74, we spread her ashes in the desert. Atlantic City is a better place because of her.

For more than 30 years Miner’s Delight put Atlantic City on the national map with its gourmet meals and colorful proprietors, Paul and Georgina Dewey Newman. One patron said it was the only place where she was willing to wear heels through cow manure to get in. Regulars knew better than to request salt and pepper or, God forbid, ketchup after witnessing Gina’s wrath: “Our meals are perfectly seasoned.”

Most locals knew little of Paul’s or Gina’s former careers in marketing and publishing. .

When Paul died in 1986, his obituary ran in the New York Times with a long list of his accomplishments, and Gina ran the restaurant and inn for several years with the help of loyal friends. According to one of the stories in our book, Gina would sometimes set the table for two and converse with her lost soul mate.
