Fathers Matter.
Research continues to show what families already know: when fathers are present, intentional, and engaged, young children thrive. From reading and play to emotional coaching and daily routines, dads bring something powerful and unique to their child’s development.

In the latest Our Town digital publication, Michael Cupeles highlights how even small, consistent moments—15 minutes of focused attention—can strengthen bonds and support children’s language, emotional, and academic growth.

At New Jersey Head Start, we celebrate and support fathers and father figures as essential partners in early learning and lifelong success.

Winter can be a difficult season for many fathers. Shorter days, less sunlight, cold weather, and holiday pressures can increase feelings of loneliness or depression. If you’re feeling this — you are not alone, and nothing is wrong with you.

Research shows that men often carry emotional pain in silence, not because they don’t feel deeply, but because they’ve been taught to "stay strong" and keep going. But true strength isn’t suffering alone. True strength is reaching out and staying connected.

What the research tells us:

✔ Depression and loneliness increase during winter months
✔ Men are less likely to ask for help, even when they need it
✔ Talking to even one supportive person improves mental health
✔ Light, movement, and community support all help stabilize mood

What we want every father to know:

You matter.
Your health matters.
Your presence in your children’s lives matters.
And you do not have to carry everything alone.

This winter, try:

🌤 Getting 10 minutes of natural light
🏃‍♂️ Moving your body daily
💬 Reaching out to a friend or fellow dad
🧭 Connecting with community groups like D.A.D.S. Gateway
📱 Messaging us privately if you need support

You don’t have to walk through winter alone.
We are here. Your community is here.

If you need support, reach out.
Healing starts with one conversation.
