🦪🌊 Celebrate NC Oyster Month with a cleanup!

Join Surfrider Bogue Banks and our friends at NC Sea Grant for a beach cleanup at Ward Creek at Otway (117 Hwy 70, Beaufort, NC) on October 24th from 10–11AM!

We’ll clean up litter while learning more about the incredible role oysters play in healthy coastal ecosystems.

Oysters help filter our water, provide habitat for marine life, and support thriving coastal communities—which is just one more reason to keep our waters clean and healthy.

Right now, bottles and cans make up about 40% of litter in North Carolina streams, and it's costing our state millions to clean up. We're also throwing away more than $41 million in plastic every year instead of recycling it.

A bottle deposit system would change this. Consumers would pay a 10-cent deposit on bottled drinks and get it back when they return the empty container. Other states have seen this reduce litter by 70-80% and significantly improve recycling rates. And North Carolina voters on both sides of the isle already support it.

So what are we waiting for? If you care about cleaner communities, less waste, and helping our economy, please sign this petition and share it!

🌊Have you seen the headlines? Recent modeling studies show that rivers in Southeast and East Asia carry 96% microplastic pollution to the ocean😱

What they don’t mention is that most plastic waste is generated in Western countries, like the US, and exported to places with limited waste and wastewater infrastructure that can mitigate release to the environment.

tHiNgS gOt a LiTtLe wEiRd tHiS wEeKEnD 👽🌀👀

(and in the nature of all things weird, we’ve got very little photographic evidence of it)

We had a BLAST at WeirdFest, where we took WeirdQuesters on a journey through the Plasticene Rift (an alternate future where humans are 99.5% plastic)😳♻️

Our mission? Help show that this dystopian future doesn’t have to become reality. WeirdQuesters learned about the plastic pollution threatening our coastal home and, most importantly, the actions we can take today to change the trajectory.

From aliens and cryptids to secret missions, it was a weird (and wonderful) night of imagining what’s possible when we choose people and our planet over plastic🌎✨

Huge thanks to everyone who stopped by, took on the Plasticene Rift, and joined us in fighting for a future that’s a little less plastic. Special thank you to Autumn and the team at Planck Length Publishing and Epic Carteret for having us out!🩵🌊
