Tomorrow is an exciting day for “Dia”, formerly Bluestem #1.
This senior gal was one of the mares taken in from the Cowley County seizure this past fall. She has struggled on her road to recovery with several set backs, including dental issues, sinus infections, and hoof troubles. However we are happy to report she has made a full recovery and tomorrow she leaves our gates for her new… forever home.
We are so grateful to have been a part of her journey and wish her all the best in her new life. 💙🌾

Back in February, we had the chance to speak with the Cowley CourierTraveler about the equine seizure that ultimately led us to open our gates here at Bluestem. They chose to include the story in the Spring edition of The Cowley Quarterly, which has just been released.

We’re grateful for the opportunity to highlight the long-term impact of kill pen bailout scams and how often they show up right here in our local communities.

At Bluestem, we remain committed to the horses in our care and to the animals from this case that were left behind.

✨Tack Sale Fundraiser✨

Please feel free to share!

A very kind friend donated all of this tack for Bluestem to sell to help fund our continued efforts with the mares.
We will attach an itemized list and pricing in the photos. Shipping will be available at the buyers expense or local delivery/ pick up options. We are open to offers on all of the items listed!

Bluestem Equine & Livestock is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit in Atlanta, Kansas. As many of you know we had a large under taking this fall assisting in a local animal cruelty case. All of the funds from this tack sale will go directly to the mares from the Cowley County case and the associated costs supporting their long road to recovery, continued care, and training.

Thank you from all the Bluestem Gals!

We’re so proud to see the Schulte Sport Horse Team and Ghost featured in the Retired Racehorse Project’s 2026–2030 Strategic Plan brochure.

While Ghost is not a Bluestem horse, we’ve always admired the Retired Racehorse Project’s commitment to Thoroughbred aftercare and responsible second careers. Their focus on long-term welfare closely aligns with what we believe at Bluestem. The real work is rehabilitation, education, and sending horses out of our gates prepared, trained, and set up to stay safe throughout their lives.

Last year’s Thoroughbred Makeover was no small undertaking. The broodmare herd arrived at Bluestem on September 30, 2025. And four days later, we loaded up and headed to Kentucky, carefully coordinating who would stay behind to monitor the herd and who could travel. It was truly a family effort.

While we love participating in the Makeover, the meaning behind that week ran deeper last year. Competing carried extra weight, knowing there was a herd of horses back at home who had been failed so badly and were now depending on us to do better by them.

We’re grateful for programs like the Retired Racehorse Project’s Thoroughbred Makeover that elevate aftercare and set a higher standard for the equine industry. We hope to continue being involved in partnerships that bring greater awareness to equine welfare and equip the next generation of horsewomen and men with the knowledge and tools to build successful lasting partnerships.

🌾 Volunteers Needed- Hay Crew 🌾

We had a good bit of hay just donated to Bluestem, and we’re needing some extra hands to get it loaded and stacked for the mares.

The hay will have to be picked it up within the next couple of days, so we’re pulling a crew of volunteers together quickly. We’ll share location details as soon as timing is finalized.

If you’re able-bodied, don’t mind a little dust, and are willing to put in honest work, we’d sure appreciate the help.

Boots and gloves required. We’ll have water on hand.

These mares are eating their way back to strength every single day. Every bale counts.

Leave a comment if you can jump in. Thank you!

This sweet girl is really coming around. She loves scratches and brushing now, which is good because she sure is shedding a ton 😅
We know she is going to make someone a great partner someday. Shes next in line to get started under saddle!
So proud of these gals, it’s amazing to see how they have grown in the last few months and hard to believe where they started.
