Convenience stores to offer free drinks, snacks July 24

Convenience stores across the US will offer free coffee, drinks and snacks to first responders on July 24 for 24/7 Day, an event recognizing their dedication. The event, organized by the National Emergency Number Association and the National Association of Convenience Stores, is to recognize the dedication of first responders who serve their communities around the clock.

NCD Announces Request for Information on Disability Emergency Management Toolkit

The toolkit will provide promising practices and guidance on how to create an emergency management plan inclusive of people with disabilities and update the federal agency’s 2009 report, Effective Emergency Management: Making Improvements for Communities and People with Disabilities.

The request for information (RFI) concerns the need for inclusive emergency management planning of people with disabilities’ unique needs.

In partnership with Georgia Tech, the State University of New York – Albany has released its annual survey on Technology, Disasters, and Preparedness. We plan on a comparative analysis, so while our target population is older adults, we want all adults to complete the survey. Please see details below.

While the number of older adults is projected to rapidly increase over the next few years, so is the frequency and intensity of natural hazards due to climate change. The research regarding how older adults make decisions during disasters is thin. Given the trends in population growth and the frequency of hazards, it is imperative that we investigate and identify the individual decision-making factors that lead to appropriate hazard adjustments for older adult populations.

This project aims to survey US adults to assess their disaster preparedness levels, disaster experience, and willingness to use broadband wireless devices for disaster preparedness. The results will help us determine comparisons in disaster preparedness and use of technology for disaster preparedness among older adults (aged 65 and older) and younger adults (aged 18 – 64) for the purpose of tailoring preparedness training technologies for our older adult population.

Time for participants: ~15-20 minutes

Risks to participants: none known that are greater than those ordinarily encountered in everyday life.

Potential benefit for participants: The potential to win a $50 gift card.

The annual Student Paper Competition is a way to recognize students focused on hazards and disaster research. One undergraduate and one graduate winner each will receive $250, publication on the Natural Hazards Center website, and free registration for the Natural Hazards Workshop and Researchers Meeting.

Emergencies such as wildfires, power outages, and extreme heat are impacting business operations throughout California. Many businesses adapt quickly to these occurrences by shifting their services, modifying operations, or temporarily transforming them into community support centers. While these pivots are often essential for continuity and community support, they might unintentionally create barriers for individuals with disabilities if accessibility is not considered in the planning process.

In the California Commission on Disability Access (CCDA) final 2025 Lunch & Learn webinar in collaboration with the Pacific ADA Center, we will provide information to help businesses learn how to maintain operational resilience while upholding accessibility during emergencies. The event will provide an overview of emergency preparedness considerations, the role of accessibility in business continuity, and how temporary changes in business functions might impact access for customers and employees with disabilities.
