Black Americans spend over 1.8 TRILLION dollars every year.
We're the most brand-loyal consumers in the country. The biggest trendsetters. Companies literally study what WE buy to figure out what everyone else will want next.
We make things cool. We put brands on the map.
And in return?
We get followed around stores.
We get "attentive service."
We get copy-paste responses when we complain.
And then I found the number that made me put my phone down.
The Black dollar leaves our community in 6 hours.
Six hours.
Not days. Not weeks. HOURS.
Every "treat yourself" moment. Every splurge. Every swipe of my credit card.
That money is GONE within 6 hours. Out of Black hands. Building wealth somewhere else.
Meanwhile:
Asian communities circulate their dollar for 28 days.
Jewish communities hold it for almost 20 days.
White communities keep it for 17 days.
And us? 6 hours.
We spend the most. We keep the least.
We need to remember Black Wall Street.
Greenwood District. Tulsa, Oklahoma. 1921.
35 blocks of Black-owned everything. Banks. Hotels. Restaurants. Movie theaters. Doctor's offices.
Black families building wealth. Black dollars staying in Black hands.
It was working. We had figured it out.
Then on May 31, 1921... white mobs burned it to the ground.
They dropped bombs from airplanes.
They murdered hundreds of people.
And when it was over, the survivors got nothing.
35 blocks of prosperity. Gone.
And it happened again and again. Rosewood. Wilmington.
Every time we tried to build something for ourselves, they found a way to destroy it.
WE NEED TO LEARN DO AND BE BETTER TO BUILD OUR COMMUNITY
