If this SERVE & SIP day doesn't fit your schedule, don't fret --- there will be more in the future, albeit with a different NPU. :-)

"Discover the captivating, untold story of Atlanta's courageous black laundresses who defied oppression and ignited a movement. Just weeks before the International Cotton Exposition swept into the city, these bold women took a stand, demanding the right to set their own wages. The Atlanta Washerwomen's Strike of 1881 marked a pivotal moment in history, showcasing one of the largest in*******al labor strikes post-Civil War. 'The Wash' invites you to delve into the intimate and often humorous journey of these ordinary women turned extraordinary fighters who fought the system and won.

"The performance is 2 hours and 20 minutes, including a 15-minute intermission.

"ABOUT THE PARTNERSHIP

"Impact Theatre Atlanta and Synchronicity Theatre will co-produce the world premiere of Kelundra Smith’s The Wash. In Spring of 2023, we held a workshop to explore design elements and next steps for the script with the playwright. The full production will run in the summer of 2024, for four weeks in Synchronicity’s midtown location, and then a 3-week run in Hapeville, where Impact Theatre is in residence at The Academy."

Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms Designates Atlanta Eagle Building as Historic Landmark

"...For more than three decades, the Atlanta Eagle...has been an integral part of Atlanta’s cultural and social landscape, including its role in helping to create beneficial policy changes and cultural improvements between the LGBTQ community and City of Atlanta.

"The bar is also one of the Southeast's most famous LGBTQ social establishments and has hosted legendary drag performers like Ru Paul and Lady Bunny that promote LGBTQ equality and HIV/AIDS education. By applying this Landmark Building/Site designation, the property cannot be demolished or have changes made to the exterior without written approval from the Urban Design Commission. This designation will ensure the iconic Midtown bar remains a cultural and historic LGBTQ fixture in Atlanta.

"In 2009, the Atlanta Police Department (APD) raided the Atlanta Eagle. Using this moment as a catalyst for change, APD quickly appointed LGBTQ community liaisons, updated their trainings and standard operating procedures with LGBTQ constituents and enhanced overall engagement with the LGBTQ community....

"Mayor Bottoms and the City of Atlanta thank the preservation advocates at Historic Atlanta, as well as all who have advocated for this landmark designation."

Come out to Northwest Library at Scotts Crossing TODAY @ 2:00 to support our fight to find the bodies of forced laborers likely buried on the Chattahoochee Brick Company site.

This meeting (open to all) of the City of Atlanta's official CBC Advisory Board marks the public launch of our campaign for INVESTIGATIVE ARCHAEOLOGY to find the remains, if any, of forced laborers who may have been secretly buried on site.

The Chattahoochee Brick Company started on Atlanta's industrial West Side in 1878, relying on a corrupt "convict lease" system that notoriously imprisoned many innocent Black men (bogus "vagrancy" and "loitering" charges were commonplace) so as to force them to make bricks for free --- a new form of slavery.

"This is not just a factory where people were treated badly. It’s a place where people were worked to death and buried in unmarked graves." - Douglas A. Blackmon, author of Pulitzer Prize-winning book "Slavery by Another Name" about the convict lease system.

We can't find the remains of these men and tell their stories if we don't look! And that is all we are asking from the City --- let us fund a team of archaeologists to look for their bodies.

We're grateful for the support of our partners in this cause.

DM us for more info and to find out how you can get involved!

Are you in favor of reparations for slavery? Sound off in the comments! (article excerpt below / link in bio)
Brazil’s nascent clamor for reparations joins existing movements abroad. In the U.S., New York, California and Illinois have established task forces on the issue. In November, the African Union partnered with Caribbean countries to form a “united front” to persuade European nations to pay for “historical mass crimes”. Institutions such as Harvard University and the Bank of England have been confronting their historical ties to the slave trade, although neither has endorsed direct financial reparations.

And in 2021, President Joe Biden expressed support for a federal commission to study a national plan for reparations for Black Americans, but he has not supported any of the efforts at the state level.

Such discussions in the U.S. inspired Brazilian nonprofit Educafro to sue the federal government in May 2022, Irapuã Santana, the lawyer who filed the suit, told The Associated Press. The organization, which fights for better access to education for Black and biracial Brazilians, is demanding an apology and a fund to combat racism, among other measures.

From SLAVER to ABOLITIONIST? That's quite the arc! Come out next month to hear author and DeKalb County CEO Michael Thurmond talk about his fascinating new book. Details below / link in bio.
"James Oglethorpe, Father of Georgia" uncovers how Oglethorpe’s philosophical and moral evolution from slave trader to abolitionist was propelled by his intellectual relationships with two formerly enslaved Black men. Oglethorpe’s unique “friendships” with Ayuba Suleiman Diallo and Olaudah Equiano, two of eighteenth-century England’s most influential Black men, are little-known examples of in*******al antislavery activism that breathed life into the formal abolitionist movement.

6:30 PM - 7:30 PM EST
