Did you know you could adopt a forest? Not literally, but many volunteers each year work through the Adopt-A-Forest program to help clean up state land where dumping has occurred. Story time!

One day, a concerned lover of the outdoors showed up at the DNR Traverse City customer service center. They pointed to a mess that was out on public land in the Hoosier valley.

The Adopt-A-Forest program coordinated with the DNR field office in Grawn to set up dumpsters. Kurt B led the volunteer effort to clean up the area on a busy September day.

Illegal dumping on state land is unfortunate, and happens more than it should (which is never) but we are thankful to Adopt-a-Forest volunteers who help the DNR identify and tackle these projects.

During we hope this inspires people to think about how they can have an impact on our beautiful outdoors for generations to come.

As a reminder, if you see dumping like this, please contact the Report All Poaching hotline by calling or texting 800-292-7800.

For information on the Adopt-a-Forest program, check the comments!

All this chatter about "exploding trees" so we thought should fit the theme. What species is this?

Good luck and please stay warm if you have to go out in this weather. 🥶

How many of you have been able to view elk in the wild? If you're looking for an opportunity to do so, fall is the BEST time to view them.

Northern Michigan is home to an elk herd, roaming through Otsego, Montmorency, Presque Isle and Cheboygan counties. The Pigeon River Country State Forest offers 13 viewing areas with driving and hiking access.

Want the best success at viewing elk? Here's one tip you'll want to remember: elk gather in forest openings near dawn and dusk to socialize and feed. AND listen carefully for the bugling of males.

Don't forget the binoculars, spotting scope or camera to capture the memories.
