The Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has issued an Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) for generic Nitenpyram tablets to treat New World screwworm infestations in dogs and cats.

⚠️ Important: This medication is for treatment only — not prevention.
It works fast, killing larvae within minutes to hours, but does not remain in an animal’s system long enough to prevent reinfestation.

On June 9, the sixth case of NWS was found in a bovine from Edwards County. The infested zone established around the case extends into portions of Sutton and Val Verde Counties. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has authorized and conditionally approved drugs available for New World screwworm infestation and prevention. Farmers and ranchers are advised to contact their veterinarian to receive direction on the appropriate product for their animals.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has named Texas A&M University System Regent John Bellinger as Senior Advisor for New World Screwworm Preparedness, tapping a longtime cattleman and food safety leader to help coordinate the federal and state response.

Bellinger, who chairs the A&M System Board of Regents' Committee on Research, will help align efforts across USDA, the state of Texas, and the A&M System as teams accelerate testing, field response, and producer outreach.
