Over a thousand Afghans have arrived in Georgia since August 2021, and hundreds more are expected in the upcoming months. Most have been temporarily paroled into the US and will need immigration legal assistance to remain in the US and seek safety from the Taliban. To meet these needs, a coalition of local nonprofits including the International Rescue Committee (IRC), the Georgia Asylum and Immigration Network (GAIN), Catholic Charities Atlanta (CLINIC), and New American Pathways have come together to serve Afghan parolees.

Through joint efforts, they are screening Afghan parolees seeking immigration assistance and identifying individuals who may have viable asylum claims. To those individuals, they are extending an invitation to attend pro se asylum clinics, during which they will provide guidance and resources regarding asylum law and the asylum application process. They will also provide limited legal support to parolees as they prepare and complete their asylum applications.

They can only provide this large-scale assistance to the community through the support of volunteers. They are seeking volunteer attorneys with asylum interest and/or experience to help Afghan parolees prepare their asylum applications and develop and refine case narratives. Law students with immigration law experience and individuals who speak Dari/Farsi or Pashto are also welcome to volunteer!

The first clinic is scheduled to take place Saturday, March 26, 2022 from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm at the New American Pathways office located at 2300 Henderson Mill Rd, Atlanta, GA 30345. If you are interested in volunteering, please complete this sign-up link to share your availability.

PAID Internship opportunity

“Sur Legal Collaborative is a new legal non-profit in Atlanta, GA working at the intersection of labor and immigrant rights. By collaborating directly with communities and grassroots groups, we seek to democratize legal knowledge and to provide legal support to movements fighting for economic, racial, and social justice in the South. Some examples of these efforts include ensuring workplace health and safety for all workers regardless of legal status, abolishing immigration detention, and fighting deportations through appellate advocacy.

Sur is pleased to announce a paid legal internship opportunity for Summer 2021. The position will provide the legal intern with opportunities to gain experience in all aspects of the organization’s work, with a focus on legal research and advocacy. The legal intern will work directly with Sur staff to fulfill its mission of working with grassroots organizations and communities to empower immigrants and workers, as well as to defend their rights in court and before government agencies.

Here is a link to the position announcement and I have attached it as well.

Please join the Emory Law Practice Societies in a Speed-Networking Event! The event will be Wednesday, March 31st at 5:30pm. We will have attorneys from 10 different practice areas in both the public and private sector (Family, Criminal, Immigration, Bankruptcy, Labor & Employment, Housing, Health, Civil Rights, Environmental, and Education). The two immigration attorneys we’ve invited and who will be present are Fatemeh Mehrabi from KIND and Paula Molano from Klinke Immigration.

The goal is to practice our networking skills and learn about alternatives to big law. Please note, we can only accept the first 30 students who sign up. Therefore, do not sign up unless you are positive you can go.

You can RSVP at www.tinyurl.com/EmoryLawSpeedNetworking. RSVPs past Friday, March 26th will not be accepted. You will be alerted if you are on the waitlist. On the week of the event, you will be emailed further instructions on how to participate, as well as your schedule for the event. Thank you!"
