West Atlanta Watershed Alliance (WAWA) is a community based environmental stewardship and advocacy organization. Our mission is to improve the quality of life within the adopted watersheds of Proctor, Sandy and Utoy Creeks by protecting, preserving, and restoring our community's natural resources. WAWA is a non-profit organization that has more than 15 years of momentum behind its community interactions. We are a largely African American organization whose members predominantly reside in, and have organized to address critical wastewater policy concerns within West Atlanta.

We’re proud to share that the Westside Chattahoochee Paddle 2026 will be joining communities across the country as part of Thrive Outside Day this Saturday, October 10!

Thrive Outside Day is a national celebration built around a simple idea: everyone deserves opportunities to experience the outdoors, build confidence outside, and feel like they belong there.

Here in Atlanta, that means getting people connected to the places right in our own backyard, including the Chattahoochee River.

For the first time since our inaugural event three years ago, we’re returning to the original Buzzard’s Roost route, paddling approximately 11 miles from Smyrna to South Fulton, with a lunch and community stop at Buzzard’s Roost Island along the way.

This year’s paddle is already fully registered, and we’re especially excited to celebrate it as part of a larger national movement supporting community-led outdoor participation.

We’re proud to celebrate Thrive Outside Day with and to represent Thrive Outside Atlanta right here on the Chattahoochee River.

Dozens of local outdoor experiences. One national celebration. Together, we Thrive Outside.

We’ll have midweek service opportunities on select Wednesdays and our Service Saturdays on the second Saturday of each month from 9 AM–1 PM.

Looking for a fun, hands-on way for youth to spend their fall break? Join West Atlanta Watershed Alliance for O-Ocademy, October 12–16, for a week of outdoor exploration, environmental learning, and activities designed to help young people connect with and care for nature.

During the creek walk we will explore nature from a different perspective by seeing how water moves through urban landscapes and its impact on our local creeks. There will also be an opportunity to see/learn how to test the water quality at the site

Join the West Atlanta Watershed Alliance as we highlight the neighborhood greenspace, Lionel Hampton-Beecher Hills Park. The first Saturday in October join us for a hike experience and a special walk in tributaries of Utoy Creek. Learn about the history of Utoy Creek and the Park!

* Comfortable clothing (layers recommended)
