Over 700 million people live in poverty - most are farmers. Kula believes the path to prosperity starts on the farm.Because our Fellowship Program is working, we're growing. In 2025, we plan to grow our Fellowship from 600 to 1,000 new farmers, impacting 5,000 people.Join us by supporting our work at the link in bio

Environmental issues are economic issues.
And economic issues are human issues.

Supporting farmers out of poverty and caring for the health of their land are not separate issues - they are inextricably bound.

Through November 15th, every donation up to $20,000 will be doubled through a generous matching grant.

The Kula Fellowship supports the thriving of land & women through the lens of regenerative agriculture.

But what is regenerative agriculture?

It's an approach to farming that emphasizes long term soil health and productivity, organic and sustainable inputs, the responsible use of natural resources, and the interconnection of farms and farmer profitability. It is an evolution of conventional agriculture which recognizes the needs and opportunities to adapt how farming has been done in order to respond to the current state of our planet and its people.

Through 8 main objectives, our program focuses on practices that will nourish the land in the long term and yield better, more sustainable production results - thus, richer livelihoods for female farmers.

Our approach to creating impact in women’s lives is based on our Theory of Change.

Fellow households move out of extreme poverty through:

🌿 training, tools, and agriculture inputs that equip them to increase their coffee harvest

🌿 business training and access to capital that support them in launching new and diversified revenue streams

🌿 personal coaching that empowers them through the process.

The last few months have been momentous. 🌿

Finalizing a program revision process that began over a year ago, our full team was all hands on deck researching, discussing and detailing key updates to both the training and inputs that we provide in our Fellowship. We couldn’t be more proud of and excited by the results: a revamped program curriculum for both coffee agronomy and household entrepreneurship, an updated 12 month program calendar, and new survey collection and data visualization tools. We’re thrilled with how these internal advancements set our team and our Fellows up for even greater success, and we’re wasting no time putting them in practice. Our new cohort was selected in June, and Fellowship commencement kicked off in the beginning of July!

Clementine truly demonstrates the very heart of our work, and this is only the beginning. 🌿

Clementine Cyimpaye, coffee farmer and burgeoning entrepreneur, graduated from the Kula Fellowship in Nyamasheke at the end of last year. Before joining the program, Clementine told us she lacked both direction and community, often experiencing loneliness as a single mother of four. She was working to provide for her family through her coffee farm but wasn’t able to earn enough money to send all of her kids to school, having to make the impossible decision of which children she could afford to educate, and which ones she couldn’t.

Then, Clementine joined the Kula Fellowship. Upon attending the first training on Self-Esteem and Decision Making, she began to feel a shift in her mindset. From there, a spark of confidence was lit, allowing her to believe she was capable of more than she previously thought and giving her space to dream dreams of starting a new business - one that might transform her life and the lives of her children. She went on to participate in all Fellowship trainings, eager to learn how to take better care of her coffee farm, as well as learning to save and develop her idea of a future honey business.
Because of her well articulated and designed business plan, Clementine won investment aimed at supporting her to expand and strengthen her new business. Since then, she has already hired four employees, two beekeepers/ guards and two salespeople. She has also already established a partnership with a factory in Gisenyi, allowing her to transport and sell her honey through a consistent channel on Lake Kivu.

For Clementine, so much has changed.
Because of her belief in herself and access to finance, she has been able to increase her monthly savings by 3900%, increase her annual income by 467%, and expand her coffee farm by 186%. She’s even shared her success with those around her - providing agronomy training to her neighbors and friends who also grow coffee. Perhaps most importantly, she no longer has to pick which of her kids get to go school, because she is able to send all four through the prosperity she has created.
