Grateful to see Atlanta Magazine highlight this year’s shift of Buford Highway Restaurant Month into June, aligning with a global moment to support local businesses. The decision to move wasn’t just about timing. It was about responding to what we’re hearing directly from small, immigrant-owned businesses along the corridor.
Through our ongoing business needs assessment, one thing is clear: many of these mom-and-pop establishments are navigating declining foot traffic, rising costs, and an increasingly competitive landscape. These are not abstract challenges. These are real pressures on businesses that have shaped one of the most culturally rich corridors in the Southeast.
That’s why Goal Buford Highway: Let’s Go exists. This campaign is designed to convert attention into action, bringing people physically into these spaces, increasing visibility, and reminding Atlanta that Buford Highway is not just a place to eat, but a place of belonging.
At the same time, moments like this also point to a larger question around preservation. As we think about tools like Tax Allocation Districts (TADs) and other place-based investments, there is an opportunity to move beyond growth alone and toward intentional cultural preservation. What would it look like to use these tools to stabilize legacy businesses, support local entrepreneurs, and retain the identity of corridors like Buford Highway?
Because once these spaces are gone, they don’t come back in the same way.
Restaurant Month is one way we activate the corridor. But long-term, it’s about ensuring that the people, cultures, and businesses that built Buford Highway have the ability to stay and thrive.
Take a moment to read the piece and, more importantly, come visit the corridor this June.
Buford Highway Restaurant Month, which is being reimagined this June with a soccer spin, raises the visibility of the multicultural businesses along the 30-mile corridor.
