Let’s take a dive into the 3 texts Joel Thompson chose to use in his work "America Will Be!"

The New Colossus was written by Emma Lazarus in 1883 to help raise funds for the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty. Emma Lazarus - a woman, activist, and Sephardic Jew - wrote this poem depicting Lady Liberty as "A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame is the imprisoned lightning, and her name Mother of Exiles." What a bold statement, particularly in a time when women were denied voting rights and xenophobia was in full swing with anti-Asian, anti-Catholic and antisemitic sentiments among others.

Langston Hughes' poem Let America Be America Again might make one wonder what he means by "again"? He answers this within the poem "O, let America be America again - the land that never has been yet - and yet must be - the land where every man is free." America has yet to fulfill its promise of freedom and this poem so beautifully clings to the last strand of hope despite the scars of slavery, abuse, and manipulative oppression.

Lastly, Joel chose to use direct quotes from high school students in our present time. These students, a chorus from Freedom High School in Florida, come from diverse immigrant backgrounds representing eleven languages. Joel prompted them with questions about why they sing and wove their replies into the tapestry of the text. He provided a platform for their voices to be heard in a time that tries to silence and shame them.

If you have the time during this Independance Season, take a quiet moment and read through any or all of these texts. They are all a part of America's past, present, and future.
