Recently, our BETTER WORK class at Lawrenceville First United Methodist Church (LV First) gathered for a Meet & Greet to kick off this new chapter!

BETTER WORK helps individuals build confidence, discover strengths, and connect with a community that wants to see each person succeed.

We’re thankful to LV First for helping make this class possible and for creating a space where participants can learn, grow, and take steps toward a stronger future.

When we talk about poverty, one number doesn’t tell the whole story.

The Census Bureau uses two measures to help us better understand economic hardship: the Official Poverty Measure and the Supplemental Poverty Measure.
While the official measure focuses primarily on cash income, the Supplemental Poverty Measure also considers government benefits, taxes, housing costs, medical expenses, and work expenses.

Why does that matter? Because being above the poverty line doesn’t necessarily mean a family can afford the essentials needed to stay stable.

At Georgia Center for Opportunity, we believe understanding poverty means looking beyond a single number to the real circumstances families face—and the conditions that help them move toward lasting stability.

That starts with meaningful work, stronger families, and greater opportunity.

It’s when parents share what’s working at home, realize they’re not alone in their challenges, and begin building friendships that extend beyond the classroom.

Through Built for Resilience, rooted in RHCK, parents gain practical tools to raise healthy, capable kids while finding a community of support along the way.

Because parenting comes with challenges, and having people to learn from, lean on, and grow with can make all the difference.

No parent should have to do it alone.

Sometimes raising highly capable kids starts with learning to listen. đź’™

When Neicee Sweet moved from Las Vegas to Georgia with her daughter, Kendall, she was looking for a fresh start. Through Raising Highly Capable Kids, she found something she didn’t realize she was missing: community.

But RHCK also challenged Neicee to see parenting differently. “I had to unlearn some things,” she said. One of the biggest lessons was learning to give her daughter a voice. “I used to always tell [Kendall] to be quiet. I learned to listen to my daughter.”

Now, Neicee asks Kendall what she needs instead of making assumptions. She gives her daughter room to speak, make choices, and build confidence.

And Kendall noticed. “My mom is a lot nicer and a lot more patient.”

That’s what RHCK is about: helping parents build the tools and confidence to create an environment where their children can grow into confident, capable young people.

For Neicee, it became more than a parenting program. It became a new way of connecting with her daughter—and a community that helped her grow along the way.

What do families need to thrive? 💙 It’s more than one thing.

Families need meaningful work.
They need strong relationships.
They need practical support.
They need communities that show up.

And they need opportunities that help them build a better future. That’s why GCO’s work looks at the whole picture.

From helping people pursue meaningful work through BETTER WORK, to helping parents build stronger relationships through Raising Highly Capable Kids, to advocating for policies that remove barriers to opportunity—we believe families deserve a path forward.

There’s good news in the latest Census data: America’s official poverty rate fell in 2025. 💙

That’s progress worth celebrating.

But here in Georgia, too many families are still working hard to get ahead. Georgia’s 2023–2025 average poverty rate remains significantly higher than the national rate.
And poverty is about more than a number.

It’s about whether families have the opportunity to build stable lives, find meaningful work, grow their income, and create a strong foundation for their children.

We should celebrate the progress we’re seeing—and keep working to make sure more Georgia families have a path forward.

Progress is worth celebrating. And there’s more work to do.

Georgia’s SNAP payment error rate was 15.21% in 2025. So, what does that mean for Georgia families?

A payment error can happen when a family’s circumstances change, information is reported incorrectly, or benefits are calculated incorrectly. For families relying on SNAP to help put food on the table, getting the right benefit amount matters.

Georgia has an opportunity to improve how SNAP is administered—making the system more accurate, easier to navigate, and more effective for the people who depend on it.

A strong safety net should help families through difficult seasons while supporting a path toward greater stability and independence.

Look at this fun crew in Bibb County! đź’™

Raising Highly Capable Kids is continuing to grow across Georgia, and we’re excited to welcome this new group of parents in Bibb County.

Dr. Tonya Moore, the community champion for Middle GA, first began this work in Lamar County, then expanded into Houston County—and now she’s bringing RHCK to Bibb County!

Each class is a chance for parents to learn practical tools, share experiences, build connections, and grow together as they work toward stronger families and thriving children.

We’re so grateful for the parents who are showing up and investing in their families—and for the community leaders helping make this work possible.

Meaningful work can be the beginning of a new chapter. đź’™

Recently, our BETTER WORK program co-hosted a hiring event at the GoodwillSR Career Center in Columbus focused on careers in healthcare.

Job-seekers had the opportunity to connect with employers offering entry-level positions that can serve as the first step toward a fulfilling career. Educational partners were also there to share certification pathways for roles in the care industry.
For people with lived experience—including those impacted by mental health challenges or the justice system—these connections can open doors to work, purpose, stability, and a stronger future.

The event was hosted through the Employment Subcommittee of the Mayor’s Commission on Re-entry, which we’re proud to be part of. By connecting people to meaningful employment opportunities, we can help address workforce shortages in behavioral health while supporting individuals as they build new paths forward.

This was our second hiring event of the year, and we’re excited to see this momentum continue!

We’re grateful to the employers, educators, community partners, and job seekers who came together to make it happen. 🤝

“I really want to create new smiles for people who are self-conscious.” 💙

For Melvin, our BETTER WORK Jobs for Life class helped him think beyond simply finding a job—it helped him discover what he wants to accomplish.

His goal is to earn his GED, attend technical college, and become a certified Dental Technician so he can help people feel more confident in their smiles.

We’re proud to celebrate Melvin and the purpose behind his goals!
