What qualifies a child for a 504 Plan?

A student is eligible for a 504 plan if they have any disability that limits daily life activities - like walking, seeing, breathing, hearing or speaking.

This includes those who have been diagnosed with ADHD, Autism, Diabetes, Epilepsy, Asthma, hearing or vision impairment, chronic asthma or allergies, and even mental health conditions like anxiety or depression.

504 Plans contain accommodations that change how a child receives instruction but it doesn’t change what they learn. If you think your child needs additional support through a 504 plan, you can request that your school evaluate them.

Are you the parent of an APS student with an IEP or 504 plan? Do you feel like your student is getting the support they need to succeed?

In APS, 22% of students who have IEPs drop out of high school. As parents, we have the power to advocate for our children so that they have a chance to succeed academically.

We need your voice. We’re demanding that APS conduct an audit of all IEPs across the system, and that they invest more into training educators so that they can help create safe spaces in their classrooms for students with special needs. Create a partnership that bridges the gap between home and school, and ask about ways you can actively support your child’s education beyond the classroom.
