Camp Mikell offers a welcoming space in the North Georgia mountains where children and youth can grow in faith, build lasting friendships, and enjoy the beauty of God’s creation.

Each summer session includes a mix of outdoor adventure, creative arts, spiritual growth, and plenty of time to relax and have fun. Campers return year after year for hiking, swimming, and campfire evenings that make Camp Mikell a truly special place.

Reading successfully requires first meeting other needs, such as a safe place to read, a lack of hunger, and dealing with trauma and anxiety that keeps children from learning. Reading successfully means coaching parents to advocate for their children at school, to check their homework, to monitor their friends so that nothing gets in the way of reading.

For this work to take hold in Macon, Appleton relationships had to overcome economic and racial barriers. They had to build trust even when the pandemic kept people apart. They had to figure out what wasn’t working and adapt into something completely new.

He was ordained in 1941 and became an assistant priest at St. Paul’s in Chattanooga, where he met and married Virginia Scott. “We felt the Holy Spirit resonate three important movements throughout our preparation and on the trip: Respect, Realign, and Restore,” said The Very Rev. Jeff Jackson, pilgrimage co-leader and rector of Saint Margaret's Episcopal Church, Carrollton. “We wrestled with these concepts and used each one as a lens to reflect on the horrors of the transatlantic slave trade and on the encouraging partnership we have with the Diocese of Cape Coast.”

While the examination of the candidates was central to the service, the Rt. Rev. Robert C. Wright, Bishop of Atlanta, also made an unscripted invitation to anyone else who desired to be reaffirmed in their baptismal faith.

Instead of the awkward pause that could follow a formal call, a steady stream of listeners stood up, stepped out of the pews, and walked to the altar. The cathedral erupted into a wave of sustained clapping, cheering, and animated conversation. Their unrehearsed response showed the core diocesan mission to love like Jesus by worshipping joyfully and growing spiritually.

“Seeing how meaningful it is for folks to respond to the Spirit and join God’s mission in this world, it reinvigorates us all,” said Sally Ulrey, Canon for Congregational Vitality and Ministry Development. “There was such a joyful spirit throughout this day!”
