The Carter Center’s May Volunteer Gardening Day took place yesterday, featuring favorable weather conditions and a satisfactory attendance. The primary tasks included deadheading, plant watering, and the installation of new rose bushes. Appreciation is extended to fellow volunteers for their contributions, making the experience of working in the rose garden with such a skilled group highly enjoyable.

Today is National Peace Rose Day! If you don’t already know the story of the Peace rose, you’re in for a real treat. Scroll through to read about how this rose holds a special place in history.⁠

The Story of the Peace Rose:⁠
⁠
In 1939, aboard one of the last aircraft to leave France during WWII, was a parcel containing budwood for an amazing new rose. The parcel was sent by Francis Meilland to rose grower Robert Pyle in the United States.⁠
⁠
With Germany’s invasion of France, postal service between France and other countries stopped. For many years, Meilland had no way of knowing what had become of the rose in America.⁠
⁠
Finally, in the summer of 1945, a letter arrived for Francis from Robert Pyle. Robert had successfully cultivated the rose. The rose was given the name Peace the same day Berlin fell to the Allied Forces.⁠
⁠
A Peace rose was handed to each of the delegates at the inaugural meeting of the United Nations in San Francisco in 1945. To this day, this beautiful rose remains a symbol of hope.⁠

On Saturday, we held our April gardening day at the stunning Carter Center rose 🌹 garden. 🪴 Our tasks included planting new varieties and tackling general maintenance. A huge thank you to all attendees - our dedication is yielding amazing results. It was a wonderful morning in the garden.
