New to on-site history or genealogy research at the Georgia Archives? Start with what you know and build from there.

A few beginner tips that can make your visit easier:

• Start with names, places, and an estimated date range
• Try spelling variations (records are not always consistent)
• Search more than one record type
• Keep track of where each record came from
• Use one record to point you to the next

Planning an on-site visit can also save time. The Georgia Archives allows researchers to view original records on-site during research hours. You can also request records in advance by identifying them in the finding aids and submitting an inquiry through the Ask an Archivist webform: https://www.georgiaarchives.org/research/research_services.

This February we’re celebrating our love for libraries — and especially the DAR Library, a truly one-of-a-kind treasure for history and genealogy lovers! Founded in 1896, the DAR Library has grown into one of the nation’s premier genealogical research centers, with an incredible collection of over 200,000 books, 10,000 research files, and thousands of manuscript items covering American history and family heritage. Many of the nearly 40,000 family histories in the collection are unique or rare and found in very few libraries nationwide.

Whether you’re tracing your roots, studying Revolutionary War era records, or exploring special collections on African American, Native American, and women’s history, the DAR Library’s rich resources are free and open to the public. Visit www.dar.org/library to discover more and plan your visit!

The 2026 DAR Library Restoration Project is beginning in July 2026.
