The Society for Ethics in Egg Donation and Surrogacy - SEEDS

The Society for Ethics in Egg Donation and Surrogacy - SEEDS SEEDS is a nonprofit group created for all US agencies to have a voice in defining a set of ethical standards for Egg Donation and Surrogacy programs.

Society for Ethics in Egg Donation and Surrogacy (SEEDS) was created by owners of egg donation and surrogacy agencies to define and classify a set of standards that are intended to apply to all such agencies in the United States. SEEDS will not have legislative authority, only advisory status. It is, however, the intention of SEEDS' founding members to expand the organization in size and outreach

to the point that SEEDS' recommendations will have a major influence and impact on future egg donation and surrogacy legislation. SEEDS' goal is to raise the standards by which agencies carry out their work in order to transcend any negative impressions that may have developed from the poor practices of a small number of agencies. Our intention is to reassure potential donors, their families, intended parents and the general public that egg donation and surrogacy can be safe, ethical options for all parties involved to overcome the problem of infertility.

We are thrilled to announce Angela Hartshorn as the new Executive Director of SEEDS.

Angela brings more than 30 years of experience in third-party reproduction, with a career that spans fertility patient care, clinical operations, FDA regulatory compliance, and the development of donor and surrogacy programs. Her leadership has helped shape programs and operations across organizations of every size—from independent fertility practices to large multisite networks.

What makes Angela’s leadership especially meaningful is that her expertise extends far beyond her professional accomplishments. She has experienced the fertility journey personally as an egg donor, gestational carrier, fertility patient, and mother to a large blended family that includes donor-conceived individuals. This unique perspective gives her a profound understanding of the people and families at the heart of our work.
——
In Angela’s words:

“My vision for SEEDS is for us to become the organization people think of first when ethics in our field is considered... I envision SEEDS to be a lighthouse in the sea of complexity third-party reproduction can become. I am grateful for the trust, and ready to get to work.”
——
That vision beautifully reflects the mission of SEEDS: to champion ethical practices, elevate professional standards, and serve as a trusted resource for intended parents, donors, surrogates, professionals, clinics, and policymakers alike.

Please join us in welcoming Angela to this important leadership role. We are excited for the future of SEEDS and the impact we will continue to make together under her guidance.

Congratulations, Angela! We are honored to have you leading the way.

This week is National Infertility Awareness Week (April 20–26). A week dedicated to breaking the silence around infertility and honoring every path to parenthood.
1 in 6 people of reproductive age experience infertility. That’s millions of people navigating grief, hope, and resilience, often without saying a word. For many, surrogacy and egg donation become part of that journey, made possible by donors and surrogates who show up in an extraordinary way.
