Hello lovely people! Let's continue our member features today with Spencer Alliston, our VP of External Affairs! Spencer is a fourth year Mechanical Engineering major.

When asked why he loves BNB, he said:

"Education is so valuable and empowering, and tutoring these kids is such a great way that Tech students can make an impact in a community that really needs it even now, when we're young and broke and busy. I heard about it and wanted to get involved however I could, so I ended up helping with external affairs and tutoring and it's been one of the best things I've done in college."

Hi everyone! Today, we'll be continuing our member features with Aradhana Chandra, our Internal Vice President. Aradhana is a fourth year International Affairs major with a concentration in Business Administration and a minor in Pre-Law Studies. She intends to pursue human rights and environmental law in the future.

When asked why she loves Books Not Bombs, she said:

"I love being a part of Books Not Bombs because it's such a tangible way to make a very real impact on a marginalized community that is so close to home. Learning about global refugee crises in my classes and through the news made it seem like these dire situations were extremely far away, but the school that we tutor at, Clarkston High School, actually has the highest refugee population in the entire eastern seaboard of the U.S, and Clarkston, GA has received over 40,000 refugees in the past 25 years. Knowing that there is a population in need that truly is so geographically close motivates me even more to get involved and to make a difference.

"Education inequity is a very real issue in this country, and the refugee students at Clarkston High School are amazing and intelligent people who deserve the same educational opportunities that others are granted. I think it's incredibly important to work towards changing this inequity that marginalized groups face, so I love giving back to this community in a way that directly impacts their future in the form of education!"

Happy Friday everyone! Starting today, we'll be doing regular member features of Books Not Bombs. We'll be kicking it off with our very own President, Nineesha Koshy!

Nineesha is a fourth year student at Georgia Tech, studying Industrial Engineering. When asked why she loves Books Not Bombs, this is what she said:

"I love being part of BNB and working with the students at Clarkston High School because having cross-cultural relationships makes me come alive. Becoming friends with some of the students has been so much fun because I get to listen to them as they share about their culture and home country.

A memorable moment from last semester was when the students threw a "Taste of Clarkston" event. Students made dishes from their home countries and you could tell they were so happy that they got to share it with other people. Some of the students were also singing/dancing to songs in languages that most others did not know. But the way that everyone was cheering each other on and supporting each other reminded me how special it is to have a culturally diverse community that expands our understanding of the world. The Clarkston HS students who came to America as refugees are world-changers; they are passionate, brilliant, kind and hard-working. I know they'll make deep impacts on people wherever they go- just like they did to me."

Hi everyone!

It’s been a while since we last posted, but Books Not Bombs at Georgia Tech has been busy with the Clarkston High School students this semester. On top of our regular tutoring, we have been hosting monthly STEM workshops. In September, we partnered with the International Rescue Committee Atlanta's Youth Futures Program on their field trip to Sweetwater Creek Park. We explored fundamental concepts such as buoyancy and drag force through building boats.

Read more about the field trip here!

The IRC in Atlanta’s Youth Futures program recently collaborated with Georgia Sierra Club and a student group from Georgia Tech to make the first field trip of the school year a great success.
