The Georgia Gopher Tortoise Conservation Initiative has successfully met its goal: permanently protecting 65 viable populations of our state reptile. This victory showcases the power of dedication and partnership!

This effort secured the tortoise’s future and helped:
• Avoid federal listing under the Endangered Species Act, protecting Georgia's economy
• Restore this crucial keystone species—tortoise burrows are vital refuges for over 300 other species

✨ Take a boating safety course – knowledge is power and this course is required for many in the state of Georgia

Feral hogs are a serious threat to Georgia's ecosystems and agriculture. Their destructive impact demands effective population control, and we're making it easier for you to join the fight.

Starting July 1, 2025, Georgia DNR will be awarding 20 state-of-the-art hog traps (valued at approximately $3,500 each) through quarterly drawings!

Five lucky winners will be chosen each quarter to receive this valuable tool, directly supporting landowners and managers in their critical control efforts. If you're on the front lines of feral hog management, don't miss this chance to upgrade your equipment. (One trap per individual per quarter).

Got a case of mistaken identity? 🧐 This is a non-venomous Brown Watersnake enjoying the sunshine, a common sight often mistaken for its venomous counterpart, the Cottonmouth.

While only 7 of Georgia's 47 native snake species are venomous, it's always best practice to observe all wildlife, especially snakes, from a respectful distance. By giving them space, you allow them to continue their vital role in our ecosystems while ensuring your safety and theirs!
