The Matzevah Foundation, Inc.

The Matzevah Foundation, Inc. Matzevah is Hebrew for a memorial stone. The Matzevah Foundation, Inc.

is a Christian non-profit registered in Georgia, which seeks to remember, preserve and honor the Jewish heritage of Poland by caring for and restoring Jewish Cemeteries in Poland. The name “matzevah” (מצבה) is derived from a Hebrew word meaning a memorial stone, which is placed at the head of a grave facing traditionally toward the Temple Mount in Jerusalem. The word matzevah reflects and capture

s the vision and purpose of the organization as it seeks to remember and honor the Jewish heritage of Poland by restoring Jewish cemeteries, and reconciling Jews and Christians through participating in a common “mitzvah.” “The concept of mitzvah is singularly Jewish in that it refers not to deeds, but to behaviors that are explicitly set forth in the Torah by One God.” One of the most important mitzvahs (mitzvot) that a Jew can perform is honoring the dead through the care of cemeteries - because the dead cannot care for themselves. This type of care is one of the highest expressions of true mercy or loving-kindness expressed in Hebrew as, Chesed Shel Emet (חסד של אמת) – literally meaning "kindness of truth."

16 years. 60 projects. 4,000 volunteers.

Our work and our time in Poland have forever changed our lives. We count it a privilege to have been a part of this mitzvah and we thank our Polish and Jewish friends for walking this journey with us. -- The Matzevah Foundation

An update from The Matzevah Foundation:

In 2010, we founded The Matzevah Foundation (TMF) to care for and restore Jewish cemeteries across Poland, aiming to promote “pojednanie," or reconciliation. We sought to move beyond mere discussions and toward a genuine "mutual mitzvah,” embodying Micah 6:8's ideals of justice, mercy, and humility to mend strained relationships and tend to neglected sites. Our heartfelt mission was to bridge divides and respond practically to the Shoah tragedy by caring for Jewish cemeteries in Poland.

After sixteen years of pursuing this mission, we have reached a Godly point of transition. Through careful reflection, prayer, and discussions with our board, partners, and friends, we’ve determined that The Matzevah Foundation is now entering its closing chapter, and we are preparing to bring our work to a thoughtful and intentional conclusion. This includes ending our direct role in leading field activities.

There’s a rabbinical saying that states, “It is not up to you to finish the task, but you are not free to avoid it.” While the task of restoring and caring for Jewish cemeteries in Poland continues, we have a sense of accomplishment in what we set out to do. Numerous local Polish individuals and organizations are now effectively continuing the cultural stewardship we helped initiate. We believe our goal of “awakening” this stewardship has been accomplished. We look forward to continuing to champion their work and dedication for many years to come.

Today we're celebrating all of the wonderful partners we've worked with. Their advice, leadership, resources, and friendship have helped to advance our work. We've conducted cemtery restorations and commemorations with them. Some joined our projects in order to study the history of the area.

We've learned so much about Jewish history, practices, Polish life, and so much more. Our lives are richer for knowing them. Thank you, friends!

Remembering some of our early work in Poland. Here's an old clip of our board member, Rachel, reflecting on her first time in Oświęcim (first of four times!). Of all the cities we've workd in, Oświęcim holds a special place in our hearts.

Our volunteers have come from around the world to join us in caring for Jewish cemeteries: Israel, the U.S., Germany, England, Ukraine, Australia, Uruguay, all across Poland, and more.

Whether it was a team of three or a team of hundreds, the efforts of diligent hands and willing spirits helped to restore these sacred places which in turn helped the local community to remember their Jewish heritage.

We've been digging in our archives and finding some pics and video from our first years of work. They are sweet reminders of why we started The Matzevah Foundation. Here's a flashback to one of our board members, Kevin, reflecting on why he first came to Poland to work.

We're taking some time to reflect on our work. This video from the early years perfectly captures our hearts for the work we've done with thousands of volunteers over the years.
