Miguel Angel Martinez, a native of Guadalajara, Mexico, graduated from the University of Guadalajara’s School of Fine Arts with a degree in illustration and graphic design. He launched his photography career as a commercial photographer at a studio in Guadalajara, working for a major advertising company. After relocating to the United States, Miguel shifted his focus to photojournalism.
He has worked as both a freelance and staff photographer for numerous publications, including the Durham Herald-Sun, Que Pasa Newspaper, the Independent Weekly in North Carolina, and the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, where he has been a staff photographer since April 2022.
His previous long-term position was with Mundo Hispanico, the largest Spanish-language newspaper in the USA, where he served as a staff photographer for 14 years. In this role, he traveled nationwide to cover significant events such as President Trump’s Inauguration, the National Democratic Convention, international soccer, the Super Bowl, and special assignments on the U.S.-Mexico border.
Miguel’s work has been featured in various prominent publications across Mexico, the USA, and internationally, including Reforma in Mexico City, Mural in Guadalajara, El Norte in Monterrey, the New York Times, the Washington Post, and the LA Times.
He is a highly decorated multimedia photojournalist, a testament to his expertise and credibility in the field. He has won multiple awards, including two Southeastern Regional Emmys for video in the Human-Interest category (bringing his total to eight), an Excellence Award by the Atlanta Press Club, first place in Outstanding Community Photo from the National Association of Hispanic Publications, and 14 first-place awards from the same organization. Additionally, he received the Compañeros Award from the Latin-American Association of Georgia.
