" I have been a member of Clan Mackay USA for 20 + years. I love my Mackay family. I was honored to do the Calling (of the Clan) this year at the Grandfather Mountain games.

Which US state is most like Scotland?

No single US state perfectly mirrors Scotland, but depending on what you value—geography, climate, or cultural heritage—three states stand out:

Geographically (Maine): Maine is the closest US analog for its indented rocky coastline, cool maritime climate, and strong forestry/fishing industries. The granite architecture of its coastal villages and deep, wooded interior closely mirror rural Scotland.

Geologically (North Carolina): Western North Carolina (the Appalachian Mountains) shares the exact same ancient mountain range as the Scottish Highlands. Culturally, this region also boasts strong historical ties to early Scottish settlers.

Size & Population (South Carolina): South Carolina is frequently compared to Scotland because it is strikingly similar in overall land area and total population (roughly 5.2 million)
