New peer reviewed research shows the most common cause of pet ear infections is Staphylococcus pseudintermedius, and around 40% of these strains are resistant to multiple antibiotics, making infections harder to treat over time. Repeated antibiotic use can add to this problem by driving more resistance. These bacteria are also highly adaptable, forming biofilms that protect them, releasing toxins that damage immune cells, and sticking tightly to tissue so they can persist and evade treatment. On the positive side, a recent study found that Lactobacillus casei can help target this pathogen directly. It was shown to inhibit the growth of S. pseudintermedius in all tested strains and produced clear antibacterial effects in lab testing.

That’s why when Dr. Karen Becker developed her one-of-a-kind canine probiotic, she included Lactobacillus casei in PRIMITIVE PROBIOTICS™ : a science-driven approach to rebuilding and maintaining your dog’s microbiome using strains inspired by wild canids, healthy domestic dogs, and living soil.

Things dogs hate that people do.

GOING FOR WALKS WITHOUT THE OPPORTUNITY TO EXPLORE AND SMELL

There are walks, and there are walks. It’s definitely important to have a dog that knows how to walk obediently on a leash. However, it’s also important to allow a dog to have some time to explore their surroundings while walking obediently on a leash. Dogs see with their noses, and they place as much importance on their sense of smell as we humans place on our sense of vision for interpreting the world around us.

PROLONGED EYE CONTACT

The more familiar you are with a dog the more you can maintain steady eye contact. Just like people, having a stranger stare at you turns creepy fast, the same is true from a dog’s perspective. All these body language cues of friendship will help a dog understand you mean no harm.

TEASING

This should be obvious, but it’s worth pointing out because too many people still think it’s funny. Don’t bark at a dog as you pass it on the street. Don’t wave or talk to a dog that is barking at you from behind a window or door. Don’t pull on a dog’s tail. The list can go on and on, but in short, don’t do something you know makes a dog mad just because you think it’s funny.

FORCING THEM IN SCARY SITUATIONS

We sometimes have to bring our pets into unfamiliar circumstances but whenever possible try and not put them in scary situations. Nobody wants to go down that “dark alley” if it’s not necessary. If you know you will be taking your pup into unknown territory, tale along some treats for positive reinforcement.

Are you a toxic pawrent?

**Raise the voice or hit the dog**

Verbal or physical punishment is not an effective way to prevent bad behavior. Instead, your dog will simply learn to fear you. For example, hitting your dog after they urinate in the house might just cause them to hide where they urinate.

**The dog hides or escapes home**

An extension of avoidance, some tense dogs literally hide under a bed or sofa from their owners. As a means of escape, they may engage in diversion activities such as digging or circling or may slink behind a tree or parked car.

**Absence of training**

If you don’t train your dog, they may start to feel lonely and bored, or both. This could lead to unruly behavior, excessive barking, jumping, and leash pulling. Dogs need training no matter their age. Untrained dogs don’t listen and become harder to train over time.

Only pet owners truly understand the heart-warming, unconditional love an animal has for its person. Pets bring such happiness and joy to those willing to embrace the quirkiness and insanity that comes hand in hand with having an animal patrolling the hallways of their homes. However, caring for a n...
