Land records are a critical resource for genealogy research but understanding them is not intuitive. Between the legal language, wildly varying ways of describing boundaries and land divisions, and complicated chains of custody through time, land records require some focused study. Get that with IGHR's "Understanding Land Records," offered during IGHR week (July 27-31). All virtual with recordings available for 30 days. Learn more and register at https://ighr.gagensociety.org/land/.

Join us for the opening day of the 2026 April History Symposium, a two-day program at the Georgia Archives exploring Revolutionary Georgia beyond the founding story.

At 12:00 p.m., Dr. Gregory Nobles will present โ€œWhose American Revolution Was It and Whose Is It?โ€ as the April Lunch and Learn. His talk will examine the Revolution as a conflict that drew in many different people and communities, each with their own stake in its meaning and outcome.

At 1:30 p.m., Dr. Robert S. Davis will present โ€œThe Story of Austin Dabney: A Black Georgia Soldier of the American Revolution.โ€ His session will trace Dabneyโ€™s life and legacy through the surviving record and place his story within the larger history of Revolutionary Georgia.

The symposium is free and open to the public. Registration is encouraged.

Not finding the person you expected? The issue might not be the record. It might be the spelling.

Names in historical records were not always written the same way. A surname could appear with several different spellings across census, marriage, court, land, or probate records, which can make research harder than it seems.

If your first search comes up empty, try:
โ€ข alternate spellings
โ€ข searching by location
โ€ข widening the date range
โ€ข checking more than one record type
โ€ข look at relatives, neighbors, or other people connected to them

Sometimes the record is there. You just have to look for the name a different way.
