For Reunification Month, we’re revisiting Ashley and Ashton’s powerful story from Episode 50 of the Foster Friendly Podcast.

When asked what word captured their story, Ashton chose home. Ashley chose love.

Two simple words that hold so much of what reunification can mean: the long road of healing, the courage to rebuild trust, and the hope that families can find their way back to one another.

Ashley and Ashton’s story is honest, emotional, and deeply hopeful, a reminder that reunification is not always easy but it can be beautiful. ❤️‍🩹

“There's nothing you can say or do that's going to make me stop caring about you.” -Paula Yost

In this week’s episode of the Foster Friendly Podcast, Paula Yost shares why it’s so important to respond to kids in your care with steady, unconditional love. Not by excusing harmful actions, but by understanding what may be underneath them. Trauma can shape the way a child reacts, tests safety, and receives care.
And over time, consistent care can help a child feel that stability and belonging they all deserve. ❤️‍🩹

"We discovered Mack’s profile on the Tennessee Kids Belong website in October 2018 when planning for a Belong Sunday at our church (I wasn't on staff with Tennessee Kids Belong yet). While searching for an I Belong Project video to show our congregation, he caught my attention, and I couldn't get him off my mind. I could read between the lines and tell that he had been adopted internationally (Haiti) and put in foster care for some reason. I kept thinking that he deserved another chance at having a family.

We started the home study process, and he moved in with us a year later in the fall of 2019. His adoption was finalized in August 2020, and he graduated last Saturday. It's been a wild ride and the hardest thing we've ever done as a family. School was incredibly difficult, so we celebrated big time because WE MADE IT!

The side-by-side photo is from the day of his IBP shoot and now. There’s also a photo of him with a man who worked at the residential facility that was his “home” for 3+ years. He now works at the high school Mack attended and was his teacher at one point. He's known Mack longer than us, so he was really proud, too!"

In this moment from Episode 94, Paula Yost shares about her daughter, whom she met through foster care when she was 14 years old.

Her story is a reminder that kids in foster care are not defined by their hardest behaviors, their trauma or the circumstances that brought them into care. With advocacy, consistency, and unconditional love, their futures can look full of hope. 💙
