Southwest Atlanta Neighboring

Southwest Atlanta Neighboring Southwest Atlanta is an area of Metropolitan Atlanta with some of the highest crime rates and dropout rates in the state of Georgia.

SWAN exists to develop young urban leaders in southwest metropolitan Atlanta to be well-educated, broad-minded citizens prepared to advocate for their community. Southwest Atlanta Neighboring’s (SWAN) Youth Leadership is a youth development program with an emphasis on developing young leaders to advocate on behalf of their respective Southwest Atlanta communities (Sylvan Hills, Capital View, Capit

al View Manor, and Adair Park). It has the highest concentration of Georgia prisoners within the penal system (80%). The schools are performing at the lowest levels in a state which rates amongst the lowest in the country. Additionally, the children in the area are subject to some of the highest exploitative activities in the city. SWAN’s vision involves youth who are positive, respectful (of self and others), secure, proactive, purposeful leaders, who can advocate for causes inside or outside of their community with diligence and dignity as well-spoken, well-educated, broad-minded productive citizens. We aim to create a future distinct from SW Atlanta’s past by convening new ways for leadership to emerge.

Finally, our TEEN SCENE program culminated in an opportunity for youth to present their micro-business concepts to our esteemed panel of respected entrepreneurs, in a kinder version of ABC-TV's famed dream-investment show "Shark Tank". Over the course of two consecutive weeks, students prepared a story board and recalled the various workshops through which they received months of detailed course training. Students were encouraged to take the initiative by scheduling appointments with staff members and outlining their presentations. After listening to each pitch, judges and business professionals in attendance asked the TEEN SCENE participants to evaluate their expectations, assess their marketing strategies, and question their underlying passions for pursuing their respective ideas. While the scores were tallied, the students were given their first "networking session" with adult professionals, helping to sharpen their personal development and business acumen. We give a very Special thanks to our professionals in attendance, ALISYA SAGGUS, ANGELA TABB, BRIDGETT MITCHELL, MAHDI WOODARD, MIKA A TERRY, MONIQUE JONES Esq., and MONTEZ DIAMOND. These persons freely volunteered their time to speak closely with our teen participants, accurately demonstrating to our young professionals-to-be how to move forward in realizing their dreams while still giving back for the good of their community.

This year, the pride and joy of The Salvation Army Kroc Community Corps Center, our beloved TEEN SCENE program, took FIRST PLACE! All youth participants competed for a chance to win $1500 and special prizes by submitting either poetry, public service announcement or artwork tackling the issue of either safe driving or bullying. Of the 200+ invited participants, our TEEN SCENE teens won over the judges with a spine-tingling short commercial on the grave dangers of bullying. And that's how we do it people -- Let our teens lead the way!!! Many thanks to the kind efforts of The Ryan Cameron Foundation! http://www.ryancameron.org

Another worthy partner of mention is author and financial skill course developer Garry Lawrence of Kidz 4 Money, LLC. Garry's open-ended dialogue and off-the-cuff intellectualism helped to keep the material fresh for discussion, as teens learned about real world business expenses and learning to "think outside the box" about the costs to maintain fiscal solvency.

Our teen & early adult participants in the TEEN SCENE program at the Salvation Army Ray & Joan Kroc Community Center examine their goals and highlight their prospective achievements on vision boards. While some chose to focus on luxurious items and travel destinations, each found a way to express their principles and desires in visual form, which they will use to help guide them to realizing their dreams.
