Please mark your calendars and/or set your DVRs. This Memorial Day, May 29, 2017, at 10:00 PM on PBS, an important film will air. It's called FARMER VETERAN, and it's the story of a combat veteran's struggle to transition to life on a farm in North Carolina--and to overcome his PTSD. I am fortunate enough to have seen an advanced screening, and in my opinion, this is the most important documentary to date about the effects of PTSD on families.

A feature-length documentary film about trauma, truth and the search for a new identity in the wake of war.

I can't believe this is real, but right now, the CBS Sunday Morning segment on children of veterans is slated as the COVER STORY for tomorrow morning at 9:00 AM. This will be the first time a national media outlet has ever done a story on the intergenerational effects of war. It features my family and me--as well as my book, THIRTY DAYS WITH MY FATHER. Children of veterans, it's time to tell our stories! Please SHARE this post!!! :)

Today I'm heading home to Honaker, Virginia, to meet the producers of CBS Sunday Morning. They're interviewing my father and me for a segment on children of veterans. It's still hard to talk about what happened to my family when my dad returned home from Vietnam, but I am thankful people are finally paying attention to how war trauma can affect children. Children of veterans, if we do not talk about what can happen when a parent returns home from war, no one will ever know.

This is a letter to YOU, sons and daughters of veterans, written by Dr. Frank Ochberg, acclaimed psychiatrist, and the man who helped coin the term "PTSD" in the early 1980s:

Letter to Children of VeteransDear Sons and Daughters of Veterans:I’m honored that Christal invited me to write a brief letter to you–whether you are young or old, content or concerned, well-loved or isolated. War–particularly harsh, sustained conditions of war–can leave a troubling legacy. Combat...
