JULY 23 UPDATE: On July 22, 18-year-old Isaiah Spragley of Rocky Mount was arrested on an outstanding warrant for the murder of Ryo Steele. The arrest was made with the assistance of the U.S. Marshals Service Task Force and the Edgecombe County Sheriff’s Office. Spragley is currently being held in the Edgecombe County Jail with no bond.

ORIGINAL RELEASE: On Sunday, July 13, 2025, at approximately 2:58 a.m., officers with the Rocky Mount Police Department responded to the 800 block of Virginia Street in reference to a report of a shooting.

Upon arrival, officers located two victims—19-year-old Ryo Steele and 20-year-old La’Ren Dickens—suffering from gunshot wounds. Despite life-saving efforts by first responders, both victims were pronounced deceased at the scene.

Detectives with the Rocky Mount Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident.
