Supporting today’s college students to become the educators of tomorrow is at the heart of the Breakthrough Teaching Fellowship. College students step into ours classrooms as Teaching Fellows, gaining real life experience and skills.

Through 300+ hours of hands-on classroom experience this past summer, Teaching Fellows worked directly with middle school students while receiving ongoing training, coaching, and mentorship from experienced educators.

This creates a powerful cycle of impact: college students gain the real-world experience and support they need to pursue careers in education, while the students they teach gain caring mentors and role models who help them envision themselves as future college graduates, professionals, and leaders.

Applications open soon for the summer of 2027. Learn more at www.breakthroughatlanta.org/teach.

Check out the first ten years of Breakthrough Atlanta! Did you know that Ambassador Andrew Young spoke at our tenth anniversary celebration? He shared a powerful vision for the program, speaking of Breakthrough as a tool to help create our country’s next generation of world leaders.

Breakthrough alum, Timothy Welbeck, also spoke to his journey that began unexpectedly one summer and led to “nearly five years of an unbelievable voyage of learning and teaching.” His education career continues today at Temple University. He said: “More than a name with a series of empty catch phrases, Breakthrough is an educational enrichment program that teaches its students that all of life is a never-ending lesson, and that learning merely begins in the classroom and continues the moment they leave its doors.”

Thirty years later, that vision continues to guide us. Breakthrough was founded on community - a community of students, parents, volunteers, Teaching Fellows, educators and donors who believe in what is possible when we come together.

Last weekend, 9th through 12th graders in our College Prep Program visited the University of Georgia! They participated in Community-Based Organization Day, hosted by Matthew Jon Huberty, Assistant Director of CBOs.

College campus tours are a cornerstone of exposing our scholars to the rigor and fun of the college environment as they prepare to pursue four-year degrees. The schedule at UGA included:

• College readiness: a "College-Minded" postsecondary lesson on high school schedules, GPA, extracurriculars, testing, and college selection.
• Campus tour: a guided walking tour highlighting major campus buildings and landmarks.
• Student experience: lunch at the campus cafeteria and a final stop at Sanford Stadium.

Thank you, UGA, for hosting and inspiring our scholars!

It all began in the summer of 1996 – when Breakthrough Atlanta first opened our doors on the campus of The Lovett School. As we celebrate our 30th anniversary, we’re taking a look at the three decades that shaped the programming we know today.

30 years ago, Breakthrough Atlanta - originally Summerbridge Atlanta - began with a bold idea: bring together talented middle school students from across Atlanta with college students who were exploring careers in education, creating a community where both could learn, lead, and grow.

With the support of then-Lovett Head of School Jim Hendrix, founding Executive Director Keno Sadler built the program from the ground up, recruiting students, developing partnerships with Atlanta schools and colleges, and bringing together a community of young educators and volunteers to launch the first summer program.

From the beginning, Summerbridge was made possible by people across Atlanta who believed in what the program could become - including Atlanta Public Schools leaders, teachers and staff; Lovett faculty and staff; college students from Morehouse College, Spelman College and Clark Atlanta University; and Lovett student volunteers who contributed their time and energy to helping the new program take root.

What began that first summer would grow into something much larger: three decades of preparing Atlanta students for college while inspiring generations of young people to become educators and leaders.

As we celebrate 30 years, we’re looking back at the people, partnerships, and community that built the foundation for what Breakthrough Atlanta is today.

Last week, Breakthrough Atlanta kicked off our first Senior Super Saturday of the year with a Common App Bootcamp, providing eight Breakthrough scholars with dedicated one-on-one support as they took an important step toward college.

Throughout the day, high school seniors worked alongside volunteers to:

✏️ Complete key sections of their Common Application
📝 Develop and strengthen their college essays
💬 Receive individualized guidance and feedback

College application season can feel overwhelming, but Breakthrough scholars don’t have to navigate it alone. Through hands-on support and personalized guidance, our College Prep Program helps students approach the process with greater confidence and preparation – all with the goal of getting into college and graduating with a four-year degree.

We’re proud of these eight seniors for the time, focus and effort they put in. The work continues throughout the fall!

This summer, middle school students spent five weeks learning, growing, and preparing for high school and the road to college.

Through Breakthrough Atlanta’s High School Readiness Program, students filled their summer with math, reading, and STEAM instruction, enrichment, mentorship, leadership development, and plenty of opportunities to explore, ask questions, and challenge themselves.

For middle schoolers, the summer is an important time to build both academic skills and confidence. But ask the students and they’ll tell you it’s also about making new friends, discovering new interests, building confidence, and beginning to picture themselves as successful high school students.

We’re already into the swing of our school year programming with our Super Saturdays and look forward to seeing our engaged scholars throughout the year!
