Each year, the Rollins School of Public Health presents two special alumni awards: the Distinguished Achievement Award, which is given to an alumnus/a who has made an outstanding contribution to the field of public health; and the Matthew Lee Girvin Award, which recognizes the accomplishments of a recent RSPH graduate.

We are delighted to recognize our 2026 recipients: Dr. Jim Dunn 92PH 98G and Shakila Ali 22PH!

Dr. Jim Dunn has built an extraordinary career as a health care executive, educator, and leader dedicated to improving lives and strengthening communities. Through leadership roles at organizations including the American Cancer Society, Cleveland Clinic, and Atrium Health, he has helped advance workplace well-being, develop future leaders, and support the health care workforce that serves millions. His commitment to service, mentorship, and innovation continues to leave a lasting impact on health care and public health.

Just four years after graduating from Rollins, Shakila Ali is already making an extraordinary impact in public health. As a Risk Communications Researcher at the CDC, she supports emergency preparedness and response efforts, while also leading the Doste Afghan Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to expanding access to food, education, and economic opportunity for vulnerable communities. Through her service, leadership, and commitment to health equity, Shakila is changing lives at home and around the world.

Congratulations to Rollins alumna Susan Furtney 97PH on her appointment as Chief Impact Officer at Shatterproof, a national nonprofit working to transform addiction treatment and end the stigma surrounding substance use disorders. In this newly created executive leadership role, Susan will guide the organization's impact strategy, bringing together efforts in prevention, treatment quality, public education, research, policy and advocacy, healthcare partnerships, and community engagement.

Shenae Miller 21PH is busy. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she earned her master of public health degree at the Rollins School of Public Health while working as a physician. At the same time, she founded Betta Health, a company offering telehealth care to underserved communities in Jamaica. The 40 Under Forty honoree is currently a physician of orthopedics, sports medicine, and aesthetic medicine and public health practitioner.

International students and alumni from the Rollins community came together Thursday evening to hear author Regina Rodríguez Sirvent discuss her novel "Singing to the Sun". Through the story of a young woman leaving Barcelona for a life-changing adventure, the conversation explored identity, belonging, family, and the journeys that shape who we become.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for this thoughtful discussion celebrating storytelling, global perspectives, and the shared experiences that connect us across cultures.
