Down Syndrome 360

Down Syndrome 360 Project DS360: An individualized view of Down syndrome because each person is unique. Worldwide, about one in every 800 babies is born with Down syndrome.

It is due to an extra chromosome 21 and is the leading cause of intellectual and developmental disabilities. Some individuals with Down syndrome have serious medical problems that affect their quality of life. How and why these problems occur in some and not in others is unknown. When we answer these questions, we will be closer to finding possible treatments that will increase the quality of life

for each unique individual with Down syndrome. The mission of the Down Syndrome Center is to improve the lives of individuals with Down syndrome and their families by combining excellence in clinical services, education, and research. We are providing excellent clinical services to individuals with Down syndrome and their families, always seeking to apply knowledge gained through research to improve lives. We also use our research and clinical experience to educate the rising generation of health professionals about Down syndrome. Working with families, parent organizations, and others to improve the understanding of Down syndrome in the community has also been a big factor of our work. Our research includes learning more about the chromosome error that leads to Down syndrome and understanding the medical and developmental consequences of an extra chromosome 21. Through our current research, we hope to uncover new information about:

-What genetic or environmental factors play a role in the severity or presence of specific medical problems associated with Down syndrome? For example, why do some infants with heart defects and others do not?
-Where can we intervene to reduce the occurrence of these medical problems?
-What causes an extra chromosome 21 to be packaged into an egg or sperm?
-Why does the age of a woman influence the behavior of chromosomes during the formation of an egg?

Hello everyone! You are invited to the 2025 DS Webinar Series presentation of "Supporting Healthy Sexuality for Individuals with Down Syndrome" on Tues June 24th at 7PM EST!

We know that individuals with Down syndrome are social beings and want to have healthy relationships. This is a skill they need to learn as it may not be inherent. In this session, parents and caregivers will learn about topics that should be addressed and how to talk about them. Resources will be shared, including visual supports, books, and free online resources.
