Last week as we saw photos of the early stages of the demolition of the old MD Collins High building, a variety of emotions spilled out in this group that we can all understand. Some sad, some mad, some moving on. In many cases, the frustration of being separated by time and distance from this building is great for a lot of us. I spoke with the Pastor of Bethany Baptist Church in Atlanta, our own Dr Craig E White Sr. '83 about offering a prayer to acknowledge the loss of this monument to our developing years. He replied with a wonderful poem called, "Ode to MD" and a brief supplication. I added the background photo courtesy of Alan Smoak '73. Special thanks to Chauncey King '87 for bringing the reality of the demolition to this alumni group.
"My Fellow Cougars,
As I contemplate the impending actions at 2800 Burdett Road, I am inspired to share a few feeble thoughts… please indulge me…
“Peace be within thy walls and prosperity within thy Palaces” is a passionate part of a prayer lodged within the 122nd Psalm in the Holy Word. It is a declaration of hope not only for the walls of the temple, but more pointedly for the visitors to the temple themselves.
I declare without fear of successful contradiction, that we are members of the greatest alma mater in the world. ‘Alma Mater’ means “nourishing mother”. We are a well-nourished nation. May we never lose our faith. GOD Bless you, and May GOD Bless The Cougar Nation."
