Pitch Practice

Pitch Practice Pitch Practice is a weekly meetup (Fridays @ 1pm at ATV) for new entrepreneurs to learn how to articulate what their business does.

We help entrepreneurs have a better chance at success by providing an open, fun, and authentic community for everyone. Pitch Practice is a free, open meetup every Friday to help new entrepreneurs find their voice, learn how to better articulate what they do, and meet other entrepreneurs. In 3 years of meeting every Friday at ATV, we've heard about 1,000 pitches. RSVP for any Friday: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/pitch-practice-tickets-225597316647

The pitch isn’t a job interview.

When you pitch, you are not trying to sell yourself, you are trying to sell the problem. Convincing the listener that this is a worthwhile problem to solve is the ultimate goal of the pitch.

The problem may seem obvious to you but you are going to be presenting to people that may not have the same experiences as you. Make sure to tell a story throughout the pitch, one that starts with background information.

Does swag matter?😎

When founding a company, getting merch seems like the last thing that should be on your mind. But having a piece of clothing with your company logo can work wonders.

During a pitch, the listener’s ears are working in overdrive. You can improve your chances of sticking in their mind in two ways. First, keep the pitch short. Second, let their other senses do the work! Seeing a visual with the company logo helps them remember the company name!

Join us this Friday! We are looking forward to seeing your merch👀 RSVP at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/pitch-practice-tickets-225597316647

Looking to test your elevator pitch?

One of the unique components of X as a platform is the character limit. The 280 limit forces users to be concise in their thoughts, and though it is meant to be candid, many are packed full of content and structure. Structuring a pitch should be a similar process.

Can you explain what your company does in a single tweet? If not, it’s time to work on that explanation. Write down everything you can think of, circling what is mission-critical. Then, structure the circled information in a way that is compelling and makes sense. TADA! You have your first elevator pitch.

Join us this Friday to test out that elevator pitch! RSVP at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/pitch-practice-tickets-225597316647

“If you can’t explain it simply, you don’t understand it well enough.” - Albert Einstein

It is always safe to assume that the people hearing your pitch are not subject matter experts in the field that your startup is in. A lot of presenters get misled when they only practice with their team or family members.

Come join us at Pitch Practice next Friday to present your idea to unbiased strangers, receive feedback, and hear from seasoned entrepreneurs.

Don’t be afraid to use humor in your pitch!

This doesn’t mean your pitch should be a stand-up routine. 🤣

Humor is best served in the context of your mistakes. There are bound to be moments when you messed up or made the wrong decision. Framing this in a humorous way will allow your audience to relate to your experiences, and you will come off as more personable.

Join us this Friday for Pitch Practice! Guest facilitator Chris Moreno is back again to lead us through some amazing pitches. RSVP at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/pitch-practice-tickets-225597316647

“How long do you think that pitch was?” 🤔

This question is asked to the presenters after every single pitch, and the answer is almost never correct. Here at Pitch Practice we strongly encourage practicing your 30-second pitches (although you can practice and length you’d like) and the answer is something along the lines of “I definitely went over, probably about 45 seconds.” Turns out, they went for 2 minutes!

It's easy to lose track of time when talking about something you love (your company), but the people listening don’t have time to hear you ramble. And rambling is unfortunately the default when you haven’t practiced your pitch. Try it! Explain your company to someone and record it. Mark down how many sentences were redundant or useless, and the percentage is probably over 50%.

Don’t get caught in this self-imposed trap. Come join us at Pitch Practice! You will get unbiased feedback from experienced mentors and other founders.

Move that body🕺

No, don’t break out into dance during a pitch. But how you move is a key part of the pitch, and can differ greatly from instance to instance. Presenting to 100+ people on a large stage and making every person feel as if they are involved by addressing different sections of the crowd is very different than an intimate pitch in a confined space like an elevator.

By default, presenters at Pitch Practice deliver as if they are explaining their idea to ~25 fellow founders (which they are), but you can prepare for anything! Let the crowd know “you are now a group of 5 investors” or “this is my elevator pitch” and the feedback will be tailored to your needs.

"The will to win is not nearly so important as the will to prepare to win." - Vince Lombardi 🏈

It’s easy to want to become an entrepreneur, it’s another thing to take steps toward that goal. Moments in your founder journey that you want are going to happen (talking to potential customers, talking to potential investors, impromptu elevator pitches), but what are you doing to prepare for them?

Working on the product is not enough. You have to be able to convert that work into a succinct few sentences that can prove to the listener that your product has value.
