It is with heavy hearts that the Board of Directors of the Marine Aquarium Societies of North America (MASNA) announces the closure of the organization. Despite our best efforts to revitalize MASNA and navigate the challenges of recent years, we have been unable to secure the necessary support to sustain our operations.

MASNA proudly organized the Marine Aquarium Conference of North America (MACNA), which for many years served as a thriving resource for aquarists to connect with peers, learn from experts, and grow their skills. We are forever grateful for the thousands of attendees, hundreds of vendors and dozens of sponsors and presenters over the years, however, like many in-person events, MACNA faced significant challenges during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. These impacts have contributed to the difficult decision we now face. As the sun sets on MACNA in its current form, we take pride in the meaningful contributions the conference has made to the marine aquarium community.

Over recent years, the way we communicate and connect has shifted dramatically, reshaping the landscape for the organizations that serve our community. The growing dominance of digital platforms has transformed how knowledge and expertise are shared, but this evolution also highlights the need for a new, modernized MASNA-like community organization—a centralized hub where the marine aquarists can unite, collaborate, and succeed together. While MASNA must close its doors, the challenges we face today present an opportunity where something new can rise—a future organization that will meet the needs of aquarists in this digital age.

We believe that with the right vision, dedication, and community support, something new and even stronger could reestablish in its place—a community-driven platform that not only connects aquarists but also upholds the passion and commitment to responsible practices that MASNA has always represented. The potential for a redefined MASNA remains, and perhaps one day, we will see its revival, adapted to the evolving needs of our community.

For many years, MASNA served as a trusted source of knowledge and expertise, and as we move forward, we encourage all aquarists to remain diligent in their pursuit of excellence by continuing to seek out reliable, validated information. Exceptional, vetted sources of knowledge still exist, including respected print publications, many of which are now available digitally, offering both convenience and a reduced environmental impact.

The MASNA board urges you to continue supporting the remaining community groups and locally owned brick-and-mortar fish stores. These pillars of our hobby are essential for maintaining the high standards that make aquarium keeping such a meaningful and rewarding experience. Without them, it may become too easy for the quality of the marine aquarium community to wane.

Thank you for your unwavering dedication throughout the years. Though MASNA may be closing, the passion for the marine aquarium hobby lives on through each of you.

With gratitude,
The MASNA Board of Directors

Announcement of the MASNA Pioneer Award for Hobbyist Advancement

The MASNA Pioneer Award recognizes the foundational contributions of scientists, conservationists, industry, and trade practitioners who have contributed immensely to what we perceive as today’s common knowledge.

These early pioneers explored their worlds in ways that others at the time could not imagine. Their significant accomplishments served to uplift others following in their footsteps, often through mentoring. Marine aquarium hobbyists would only be as knowledgeable and successful in their endeavors today, with the contributions of these early pioneers.

The 2024 MASNA Pioneer Award for Hobbyist Advancement
The Marine Aquarium Societies of North America (MASNA) proudly announces Ryan Batcheller as the recipient of the 2024 MASNA Pioneer Award for Hobbyist Advancement.

Ryan Batcheller’s contributions to the marine aquarium hobby are groundbreaking. His pioneering efforts in disseminating valuable information to hobbyists through the Bulk Reef Supply platform have profoundly shaped how enthusiasts worldwide approach marine aquarium husbandry.

Ryan began his journey of reefkeeping in April of 2004 with the start of his own reef tank and his first posting on a reefkeeping forum. His desire to “be better” quickly led to the development of his own coral food as a personal project. This didn’t stay personal long, and Reef Chili became available to local club members and beyond, through his then newly established ReefChili.com, in December of that year.

In February of 2007, after seeing the positive results of using a two-part additive for his reef tank, Ryan expanded his reach and started TwoPartSolutions.com to make the method more available to a broader sector of the reefkeeping population. Then, in January of 2008, at the increased demand of his customers for more than just the two parts, Ryan evolved Two Part Solutions into Bulk Reef Supply. Ryan wanted his customers to experience a club member helping directly with their system. He felt he could accomplish that, by scaling with a relatively new online tool called YouTube. BRStv was launched in June of 2008, and Ryan quickly realized that more than additives, bulk chemicals, and custom modifications, the reefkeeping community wanted and needed, accurate, helpful information they could find all in one place.

Ryan continued to build Bulk Reef Supply, offering an ever-growing array of products. But more importantly, he expanded his efforts to inform and educate hobbyists through the BRStv channel.

Ryan has established himself as a beacon of knowledge, producing a vast array of educational, research, and instructional videos that transcend mere marketing. These videos delve into essential aspects of marine aquarium maintenance, from calcium and alkalinity supply to pH regulation, flow dynamics, lighting, and beyond. The BRStv YouTube channel following and influence grew. By 2024, after over 2,000 videos, BRStv had garnered over 100 million views! Ryan considers these 100 million questions answered one of his greatest career achievements. His ability to distill complex concepts into accessible, actionable advice has empowered countless hobbyists to achieve greater success and sustainability in their aquatic endeavors. Today, the BRS YouTube channel has more subscribers than Petco, PetSmart, and Chewy combined.

Ryan’s commitment to educating hobbyists has not only enhanced their success but has also played a crucial role in preserving marine life within reef systems worldwide.
In recognition of his unparalleled dedication and profound impact on the marine aquarium community, MASNA is honored to present Ryan Batcheller with the MASNA Pioneer Award for Hobbyist Advancement. His visionary leadership and unwavering commitment to advancing the understanding and practice of marine aquarium husbandry exemplify the spirit of this prestigious award.

Please join us in congratulating Ryan Batcheller on his exceptional achievements and contributions to the marine aquarium hobby.

2024 MASNA Award

The MASNA Award is arguably the most prestigious in the realm of reef keeping. The list of winners is decorated with individuals who have been active in aquarium keeping for decades and whose impacts have molded the hobby into the multidisciplinary balance of science, art, and animal companionship as we know it today. These aquarists have demonstrated unwavering dedication to and significant impacts on the marine aquarium community. Championing excellence in reef keeping and serving to set the standard for best practices in our industry, it is our utmost pleasure to announce Marc Levenson as the 2024 MASNA Award recipient.

Marc’s passion for marine life began when he was just a child. His father would go on trips all over the world. On one such trip to the island of Mo’orea, 9-year-old Marc was lucky enough to tag along. Full of youthful energy and curiosity, he spent each day exploring the ocean world encircling the tiny Pacific Island. Young Marc would gather sea life in a water bottle he had cut open to create a microcosm and show it to beachgoers, encouraging them to explore the underwater realm just beneath the gentle waves of the lagoon. At this impressionable age, the sight of corals, anemones, and clownfish incited his life-long journey of marine aquarium keeping.

Marc’s passion for sharing knowledge is evident with his website melevsreef.com and the thousands upon thousands of interactions on various forums over the years, and then later further support of aquarists through his educational YouTube channel. Marc quickly chimes in without hesitation when a fellow aquarist needs help with that same excitement as the boy on the beach of Mo’orea. Anyone who has discussed reef tanks with Marc has undoubtedly experienced his enthusiasm and has been inspired to be the best aquarist that they can be.

Facing complicated challenges head-on is fairly commonplace for aquarists, and Marc has dealt with his fair share of less-than-ideal reefkeeping scenarios. Every aquarist’s nightmare is the venerable aquarium seam failure or cracked glass. The thought of waking up to a flooded living room often keeps many of us on edge. Horror stories frequently catch major attention on forums and blogs. This unfortunate occurrence has impacted Marc personally. What Marc did to remedy the situation is nothing short of heroic. Making quick decisions and acting fast, he assembled a backup tank and rescued every animal he could from the failed aquarium. One particular fish named Spock, a Naso Tang, was rescued and held for over a year in makeshift tanks until a new aquarium could be installed in his home. Spock is with Marc to this day and underlines Marc’s paramount respect for animal life and the measures he will take to ensure the well-being of those in his care.

Marc has shared many of his innovations with the community to improve aquarium systems. After a tragic experience following a system pump outage, Marc and a good friend created what likely may have been the very first feeding timer applied to a reef aquarium. Before such a device was available at the local fish store, the duo built a homemade pump control box that would pause pump operation for a limited time during daily feedings and resume pump operation automatically. Such devices are now commonplace from a variety of manufacturers, and most reef equipment utilizes this fail-safe design, ensuring the safety of countless aquarium animals.

Another one of Marc’s innovations has humbly become the norm for many in-sump refugium layouts. This approach, referred to simply as “Model-F,” partitions waterflow returning to the sump into two pathways: one into the refugium, and the other into the main sump chamber. In this way, the refugium remains quiescent allowing macro algae to flourish without turbulent flow, and the second water pathway passes through mechanical filtration for the display tank to thrive. Although he does sell equipment he has manufactured, Marc has never capitalized on these designs. Instead, he shares these concepts with the greater aquarium community so that everyone may benefit from his creations.

Marc has been a familiar face advocating for and supporting organizations such as MASNA and MACNA since the beginning. He has not wavered in his support for continuing the traditions of our reefkeeping community and what it means to so many of us. When MACNA 2023 was not able to take place, Marc volunteered to host a 24-hr live stream on his channel and coined it MARCNA 2023 to ensure the reefkeeping community carried on the tradition. Within those 24 hours, he had scheduled guests from around the globe.

His selflessness, can-do attitude and positivity are characteristics all aquarists should embrace. The MASNA Board of Directors is delighted to add Mr. Levenson to the list of outstanding individuals who have supported the growth and advancement of the marine aquarium keeping community. We look forward to Marc’s continued contributions to the hobby through his channel and as the current Executive Editor of CORAL Magazine and cannot wait to see what his next innovation will do for home aquariums.

The Marine Aquarium Societies of North America (MASNA) deeply regrets to announce the cancellation of the 2024 Marine Aquarium Conference of North America (MACNA), originally slated for August 30th to September 1st at the Swan and Dolphin Resort in Orlando, Florida. This decision, made by our Board of Directors with heavy hearts and immense disappointment, stems from a list of factors including disruptions to our revenue stream post Covid, pre existing contractual obligations, and a systemic change of how the aquarium community gathers and shares educational information. Despite our earnest efforts, we are unable to proceed with the event as planned.

We understand the excitement and anticipation that attendees, exhibitors, and partners had for MACNA 2024, and are forever grateful to those who have shared their support and encouragement. All ticket holders will receive a full refund of their ticket purchase.
We hope there is some way the education, scholarship, awards and other programs that have made MASNA a key factor in the marine aquarium community for over 30 years, can continue, and not be lost forever.

We express our sincerest gratitude to everyone, especially the companies that have shown support for MASNA/MACNA, and we encourage the community at large to support those companies that stepped up in sponsoring this year’s events. Those sponsors as well as others who have put forth invaluable effort are listed below. Please do what you can to show your appreciation to them by your patronage.

Thank you,
The MASNA Board of Directors
