In Genesis, God's creates humans in a garden. By sowing seeds, planting, watering, harvesting and composting, we connect to the Creator, the earth and one another. My UM Mission Volunteer assignment placed me at Universidad Biblica Latinoamericana in San Jose, Costa Rica in 2 gardens working with students, staff and community members.

We laugh
We toil
We eat
We sweat
We create

Through gardening, we witness environmental justice in the midst of a changing climate. Amen!

Rhonda Mines (left) and Kathy Mines are two veteran Mission Volunteers who serve at Ketchikan Hostel in Alaska. Rhonda starts in May preparing the hostel and welcoming guest. Then Kathy arrives in July and Rhonda hands off to Kathy who stays until about Labor Day. This is an amazing partnership they have developed over the years and continues to share in Ketchikan’s mission ministry every summer.

Update from Mission Volunteer Natasha A., serving at ARI in Japan.

"Good afternoon! I just wanted to let you know that my time at ARI has been amazing so far!!

ARI is such a diverse, tight-knit community with individuals from over 15 different countries. There really isn't anywhere else in the World that compares to it. I primarily work with the Admissions office, where I correspond with potential participants from around the World. I also assist in the kitchen. At ARI, everyone cares so deeply for one another. Although many of us come from different backgrounds, traditions, and religions, we all learn, labor, and live together. I would highly recommend any potential Mission Volunteer to come to ARI. I have grown a lot as an aspiring pastor and professor. I feel much more in touch with myself, Creation, and those around me."

For more information about serving at ARI or with one of our other mission partners, please email [email protected].
