It’s Historic Preservation Month!

While the preservation community had a major set back with Gov. Kemp’s recent veto of HB 376 (which would have raised the cap on available Historic Tax Credits further incentivizing preservation efforts), there are many other preservation wins to celebrate.

Easements Altanta continues stewarding our 51 protected properties with more in the pipeline. Stay tuned as we look forward to sharing the stories behind the most recent additions to our portfolio.

One of our parent organizations, and Executive Director David Yoakley Mitchell continue to work tirelessly to advocate for our historic resources. From raising preservation awareness by spearheading a proclamation from the Atlanta City Council recognizing May as Historic Preservation Month to advocating for the successful NRHP listing of South View Cemetery, perseverance prevails.

Also, check out our friends and their advocacy efforts as well as the recent award recipients for many outstanding preservation projects in the state.

Hard work, dedication, and goodness abounds!

Super cute activities for the PreK - 2nd grade crowd…

Happy Preservation Month!

A major goal of the ACHP is to communicate the value and benefits of maintaining and enhancing historic places for future generations of Americans. As we commemorate National Historic Preservation Month, the ACHP, in cooperation with the Richard H. Jenrette Foundation, has developed activity books that parents and teachers can download to teach children the importance of historic preservation. https://www.achp.gov/initiatives/educational-opportunities

In the Pre-Kindergarten through 2nd Grade Preservation Pals Activity Guide, kids are guided through a series of fun puzzles and games. Through crosswords, matching games, mazes, and stories, young students learn vocabulary relating to preservation, find out about preservation careers, and take a pledge to be a Preservation Pal and help protect the special places that tell the story of our past. Download the PK-2 activity book here and be sure to share it!https://www.achp.gov/sites/default/files/2025-08/250721%202025%20ACHP%20Preservation%20Pals%20Activity%20Guide%20PK-2.pdf

Uh-oh! Easements Atlanta has been called to the Principal’s Office! 😳

The Vice-Principal’s Office to be exact. Loved helping to share the story of Kirkwood Lofts Home Tour today. Formerly Kirkwood Elementary School, the campus is comprised of four buildings dating from 1906 to 1965 and listed on the NRHP and is protected in perpetuity by a conservation easement.

The unit on tour was the Vice Principal’s office in the building constructed in 1921. The unit also housed
offices for counseling and the school nurse. 12’ ceilings, historic floors and Austral windows add incredible character to the space.

Austral windows were common in the early 20th century in schools, libraries and other public buildings. They eliminated the need for a double hung sash with cords, pulleys, and weights. When fully open they provided 70% ventilation of a space vs. the 50% of a double-hung sash in the days before air-conditioned spaces.

Home tour runs tomorrow 5/17/26 as well. Check out for ticket info…

In Memoriam: Jerry Luxemburger

Easements Atlanta honors the life and legacy of Jerry Luxemburger, a founding member of Easements Atlanta whose vision and leadership helped shape the organization from its earliest days. A graduate of Yale University and a veteran of the United States Navy, where he logged over 700 hours flying an AD-3 carrier-based aircraft, Jerry later brought that same dedication to his legal and civic career, leading the effort to establish Easements Atlanta in 1984. Without his commitment, Easements Atlanta would not be what it is today, and he will be deeply missed.

A celebration of Jerry’s life will be held on Tuesday, March 24, at 11:00 AM at Trinity Presbyterian Church (3003 Howell Mill Road NW, Atlanta, GA 30327).

Please read the full obituary here:

Please join us in welcoming the newest member of the Easements Atlanta team, Kimberly D., our Stewardship Intern for 2025-2026!

Kimberly graduated from UGA with a BSA in Hospitality and Food Industry Managment, and has just begun her graduate studies in the program.

Kimberly will primarily be conducting the annual inspections of our easement properties- one of our most important responsibilities. During orientation several weeks ago, Kimberly and Sarah hit the road for inspections at the William Oliver and Freeman Ford buildings, where Kimberly began learning about inspection protocols and issues common to historic buildings such as sagging lintels and mortar recession.

After nearly two months with us, Kimberly remains excited about her role with EA, saying, “ Historic preservation is such a wide field - I am excited to dive deeper into the world of easements and learn real world applications to what I learn in the classroom.”

Welcome Kimberly! 🎉

With a new school year underway, this is a great time to highlight the former school buildings in our portfolio. Four were successfully converted to multi-family residences back in the 1980s and 1990s and now provide some of the most unique living spaces in town. One continues to serve in an academic setting. All are protected by a preservation easement that ensures that the historic character of the building is preserved.
