Seismogram and spectrogram as recorded in Metro Atlanta of 2.4 quake near Resaca, GA a bit before 5 a.m. EDT om 8/22. A timely reminder that the Atlanta Geological Society Monthly Meeting at Fernbank Museum of Natural History this coming Tuesday evening (8/25) will feature Georgia Tech seismologist Dr. Xu Si who will be discussing local-scale seismicity.

!!! IMPORTANT: We have been asked to have the meeting in the 3rd floor conference room rather than the auditorium. When we have the meetings in that location, there are special challenges, some beyond our control, with the Zoom broadcasts. So I'm encouraging as many people as possible to attend in person. We will still do our best to broadcast live on Zoom. AND we will attempt to record the room on a stand-alone camera that can be provided to remote members after the meeting.

Summer is coming to an end and it's time to return to our regularly scheduled meetings. We're going to get things shaking on Tuesday, August 25 at Fernbank Museum with a presentation on local seismicity by Dr. Xu Si from Georgia Tech. I hope that everyone can join us.

I hope everyone's summer is going well.

Please remember that we start meeting again this month on Tuesday, August 25!

More details in the next few days....but our seismology friends at Georgia Tech are going to return to shake things up!

Congratulations again to this year's winners of the Nils Thompson Memorial Award. We just received these nice images from the Georgia Science and Engineering Fair director. I thought I would share them with you (despite the fact that I accidentally had hit the anti-gravity button on my tie). They also give us an opportunity to recognize their teachers!

Dear Friends and Colleagues:

The Southeastern Section of the Geological Society of America will hold our 2027 meeting in Savannah, Georgia on April 25-28.

The portal is now open for GSA members to submit proposals for topical sessions, symposia, field trips, and short courses at: https://www.geosociety.org/GSA/Sections/se/2027mtg/home.aspx?hkey=88411fd7-3278-41be-aa78-f451032e17f3&WebsiteKey=a5b62ffc-18e7-49eb-b75a-db5406bdc7ea

The deadline for proposals is July 30, 2026.

We are soliciting proposals that cover a broad range of topics that showcase the work that is being done by geologists across the region. We especially want to highlight the diverse geology of the Southeast from the highest Blue Ridge peaks to our barrier island beaches. And as Co-chair of the Technical Program Committee, I strongly encourage those of you doing work in planetary geology to consider proposing innovative sessions. Almost all our academic institutions across the Southeast are now engaged in important planetary science investigations.

Thank you for helping us make this meeting a memorable one.

Co-Chair Technical Program Committee
President, Atlanta Geological Society
Visiting Research Scientist, University of Georgia
