Official Police Report - Last Friday's carjacking / homicide
#153383232 – Chas Allen & 8th – Carjacking/HOMICIDE – 12/04/2015
[RESEARCH NOTES: No criminal or arrest history turned up on main victim, Sean Turner. Because the police report does not contain a DOB, a background check on Thomas, the other individual in the car, led to inconclusive results.]
On 12/04/2015 at 2113 hrs I, Ofc. Scheurich responded with several units including Lt. Sokloski, Sgt. Straut and Sgt. Bowers to the intersection of Charles Allen Dr. NE and 8th St. NE on a person shot. Upon arrival Grady 243 and Atlanta Fire were on scene rendering aid to 1 white male victim. The male victim, identified as Mr. Sean Turner, appeared to have a gunshot wound to his forearm, and abdomen. He was alert and breathing. but screaming and unable to communicate what happened. Grady EMT's advised that he was low/sick. He was transported to AMC in critical condition. Zone 5 CID and Homicide were notified and responded to the scene. A crime scene was established and I created a crime scene log. Witnesses were separated and written statements were completed and forwarded to Zone 5 Investigations.
There were 3 witnesses on scene. We first spoke with Ms. WITNESS1. She advised she was in front of 455 8th St. NE when she heard 1 gunshot. She turned towards the gunshot and saw a male lying on the ground screaming in pain. She then saw a white BMW flee the scene at a high rate of speed east on 8th St. towards Monroe Dr. She was unable to get a description of the suspects or a license plate on the vehicle. Ms. WITNESS1 called 911 and applied pressure to Mr. Turner's wounds. She attempted to keep him talking and followed the instructions that the 911 dispatcher gave her.
Another witness, WITNESS2 was walking his dog on Charles Allen during the incident and witnessed two white males get out of a white BMW and two rear passengers jump into the front of the vehicle and sped off up the street. When the vehicle stopped at the stop sign. Mr. WITNESS2 stated he saw one the white males run up to the driver side of the vehicle and open the door, at the time he heard gun shots. The vehicle then turned left onto 8th street towards Monroe drive.
We then spoke with Mr. Steven Thomas. Mr. Thomas advised that the person shot was his friend and that they were just car jacked. Mr. Thomas advised that before they were car jacked they were at the BP station at 356 Boulevard where they ran into the brother of one of their old friends. He did not know his real name, but said he goes by the street name of "Salsa." They asked “Salsa” if he was able to get some ma*****na for them. Salsa said that he could get some. Mr. Thomas then said that 2 unknown black males met up with "Salsa" and got into back seat of the BMW with them. He said "Salsa" got into a different car and was going to follow them to where the ma*****na was supposed to be purchased. The two males directed them to drive down Charles Allen Drive and told them to park in front of Charles Allen Dr. and 9th St. They pulled to the side of the road and both of the suspects in the back seat pulled out guns and put it to the back of Mr. Thomas' and Mr. Turner's head. They ordered them out of the car and give them their wallets and cellphones, both Mr. Thomas and Mr. Turner exited the vehicle. The suspects then exited from the back of the car and got into the front of the vehicle and drove south on Charles Allen, where they got stuck in traffic at 8th St. Mr. Turner saw that the car had stopped in traffic so Mr. Turner ran after the car. When he caught up to the car, he opened the driver side door in an attempt to retrieve his car from the suspects and the driver shot him and fled. Mr. Thomas could not provide a good description of the 2 black males that car jacked them. The only description he provided was that they were black males in their mid-20s with short hair.
Once Mr. Turner arrived at Atlanta Medical Center, one of the trauma room nurses advised that his vital signs appeared stable, but that he is currently in surgery and we are unable to speak with him. A lookout was given citywide on the carjacked vehicle and suspects. The vehicle was identified as a 1997 white 4-door BMW 5 series, GA tag # QFC2412, with tan interior and front end damage. The vehicle tag was later obtained and placed on NCIC/GCIC by Inv. Sutton. Inv. Jenkins responded to Atlanta Medical Center and conducted a follow up investigation with the victim. Inv. Jenkins also went to the BP gas station on Boulevard to view possible surveillance video.
Crime scene technician, Montgomery #7314, responded and processed the scene. Homicide Investigators Smith and Young along with Sgt. Jimenez arrived on scene and assisted Zone 5 investigators with interviewing witnesses. Cameras were located on the southwest corner of Grady High School, school detectives were notified and the surveillance video will be retrieved at a later time. Officers also canvased the area for private cameras but none were located at the time. The victims were not sure if their cell phones had any tracking on them, but would attempt to try.
