$40,000 for Atlanta's animals, and the people who love them.

On Monday, Buckhead Rotary presented LifeLine Animal Project with a $40,000 gift. As the largest animal welfare organization in Georgia, LifeLine manages Fulton and DeKalb County Animal Services and runs outreach programs that provide food, supplies and low-cost vet care so families and their pets can stay together.

Sheffield Hale, President and CEO of the Atlanta History Center, gave us a look inside one of the museum's most remarkable collections. 🏛️

Sheffield shared that the Atlanta History Center holds uniquely rare Civil War and American history artifacts, pieces that help tell the fuller story of where we've been.

As he put it: "The museum's job is providing context... and letting the exhibits and other sources talk to each other."

That's how our history is not just preserved, but interconnected. 🧩

Please join us in welcoming our newest member, García-Sjögrim! 🔴

Humberto serves as Vice President of Revenue at Big Green Egg, where he leads growth across U.S. and international markets. His work centers on strengthening dealer and distributor partnerships and partnering with product, marketing, and operations to get the right product to the right place with the right message. His career spans consumer brands, global operations, and large-scale transformation work, and he studied at Emory University's Goizueta Business School.

Outside of work, he's the founder of Neighbors for a United Atlanta and Pa'lante Georgia. He'll tell you that "cooking is an act of love, community matters, and leadership starts with listening." That's a philosophy that fits right in around here.

This week, Buckhead Rotary welcomed Sheffield Hale, President and CEO of the Atlanta History Center .🏛️

Before leading one of the city's most important cultural institutions, Sheffield spent a decade as Chief Counsel at the American Cancer Society, among other notable chapters in his career.

Sheffield walked us through Atlanta's ambitious beginnings, tracing the city's founding visions forward to its ongoing goals of becoming a true international city.

From a small railroad crossing to a global player, Atlanta's story is still being written. 📖🌍

Comer Yates didn't pull punches during his talk with our club last week 💭

We do our children a disservice when we're not intentional about where they're learning from. The abundance of screens, algorithms, and AI feeds shape their worldview and disrupt how kids view the world around us. The mental health toll on young people is real and rising to say the least.

Comers' challenge to us? Put the antidotes back in kids' hands! Books, travel, and real conversations with really interesting people are activities that actually widens a young mind instead of narrowing it!

Twenty-five years on, we remember the 2,977 lives lost on September 11, 2001, and the first responders who ran toward the danger. Their example still shapes what service means.

Comer Yates, Executive Director of the Atlanta Speech School, spoke on the experience of Spanish-speaking children navigating environments that don't feel safe. When a child's surroundings feel unstable, the brain shifts into survival mode: fight or flight. Learning becomes secondary to safety.

Yates' point landed simply: creating a safe space to learn is not the job of our young students. It's our jobs as adults!

For educators and families working with Spanish-speaking students in Georgia, especially those in under-resourced communities, a calm and secure environment isn't just nice to have. It's the foundation that fundamental learning and brain development is built on. 🧠📚

Monday's speaker: F. Sheffield Hale, President & CEO of the Atlanta History Center

A native Atlantan who came to the role by way of law, Sheffield spent 16 years at Kilpatrick Townsend & Stockton, then a decade as Chief Counsel at the American Cancer Society, before taking over the History Center in 2012.

Under his leadership, the History Center moved the Battle of Atlanta cyclorama to a new facility on its Buckhead campus and created the Confederate Monument Interpretation Guide, which has supported communities around the country working through the same questions. In 2021 he received the Georgia Governor's Award for Arts & Humanities from Gov. Brian Kemp.

He's also a Buckhead neighbor in more ways than one. The History Center campus sits just up the road on West Paces Ferry, and Sheffield serves as a trustee of the Buckhead Coalition alongside his work at the museum.

And he's speaking in a milestone year: the Atlanta History Center turns 100 in 2026.

Buckhead Rotary is a club without borders. 🌍

This week, we celebrated the international members and guests who make our meetings feel like a gathering of the world. These friendships are built across continents, cultures shared over a simple conversation, and a reminder that service has no passport!

We love continuing our closely held traditions as new international guests join us. We proudly exchange flags as a small gesture that carries a big message, you're welcome here and your country is part of our story now.

From hosting exchange students to mentoring young adults abroad, Rotary's international reach isn't just a talking point for us, it's who we are. We believe developing the next generation of global leaders starts with an open door and a shared table.

To every guest who has brought a piece of their home into our room, thank you!

"Poverty doesn't cause low literacy. Low literacy causes poverty."

Dave Peterson, our Director of Development, learned that lesson at his own kitchen table, teaching his father the fractions and decimals a WWII-era high school dropout never got to learn. Shortly after, his dad made manager.

In Georgia, as many as a third of adults are functionally illiterate. Their kids inherit that. So we partner with Horizons Atlanta, a tuition-free summer program where scholars return year after year, building the reading skills that change a trajectory.

It's never been about writing a check. Relationships are what make it stick.
