BUY-Cobb, Inc.

BUY-Cobb, Inc. In 1994, Blacks United for Youth-Cobb (BUY-Cobb) was officially incorporated.

For almost 25 years, BUY-Cobb has provided leadership development, scholarships, mentoring, and community services for the youth of Cobb County and the surrounding communities of greater Atlanta. In 1991 Winston Strickland, Dr. James Fisher, and Don Johnson had a vision to establish a nonprofit organization to make a difference in the lives of Cobb County Youth. Dr. Fisher sought to bring the idea

s of being a sharecropper to the field of education. In doing so, BUY-Cobb developed its co-educational Leadership Academy to instill life skills missing in the current education system to today's youth.

The fight for equality is not done, but today we celebrate the freedom won, the progress made, and the resilience that continues to define us this Juneteenth.

As the Obama Presidential Center opens in Chicago, it serves as a reminder that Black history isn't confined to the past… it's still being written every day. 🖤

Summer camp can be about so much more than keeping kids busy while school's out.

Across the country, programs are helping young people connect with Black history, culture, music, dance, leadership, and creative expression—all while building confidence, community, and lifelong skills. From the Otis Redding Center for the Arts in Georgia to historic camps and cultural institutions nationwide, these experiences are helping shape the next generation.

: Memorial Day was started by former slaves on May, 1, 1865 in Charleston, SC to honor 257 dead Union Soldiers who had been buried in a mass grave in a Confederate prison camp. They dug up the bodies and worked for 2 weeks to give them a proper burial as gratitude for fighting for their freedom. They then held a parade of 10,000 people led by 2,800 Black children where they marched, sang and celebrated.

Today we remember and honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice to serve. Forever grateful. 🇺🇸

In an effort to highlight the people who are leading colleges and universities across the nation, we at Watch The Yard reached out to Mercer University  and did an interview with Alisha Mitchell(.a.mitchell ), the 2025–2026 Student Government President.

The position of student government president is a highly respected role and there is a special pride that one takes in being elected by their peers to lead. Alisha, who is majoring in Political Science & Journalism, is from Austell, Georgia.

We interviewed Alisha Mitchell and talked to her about her goals, leadership journey, and what it means to serve as Student Government President during the 2025–2026 school year.
