The weather was BEAUTIFUL! The community of St. Francis in Anse à Galets gathered to celebrate the annual Feast of St. Francis with a gastronomic fair, special music, a demonstration by the Red Cross for managing emergencies. It all culminated with a traditional worship service Sunday.

The Goat Project could not distribute new goats this year from the mainland, yet the island's population is growing! Project director Mr. Jeanthony Joseph and his team focus on supporting reproduction of goats born in previous years to project recipients. Mobile clinics like this- last week in Bois Brûlé- provide an opportunity for vaccinations, wound care, and advice. This community-centered care assures that a sustainable and healthy population continues on La Gonâve.

The joyful sounds of children playing in the sunshine, safe and carefree outside their classrooms. After a morning of lessons with beloved teachers, a full belly from school lunch and a walk home through rural fields, these kids had a great week. What an amazing gift. The Parish of St. Francis has 9 rural primary schools (PreK- 6th grade) in La Gonâve; these schools educated 1300 children in the 2025-26 academic year! Each school has one or more US partners who help support teacher salaries, school lunches, books and supplies. Two (high) schools are better than one! This year we welcome the first sophomore (S2) class to Sts. Marthe & Marie High School in Palma. They join fellow S2s who attend the second Episcopal high school - St. Francis in Anse a Galets. In Haiti, high schools are known as college with 4 secondaire grades. Primary schools are grade 1-6, fundamental grades are AF 7-9, and secondaire grades are S1-4 to total 13 years! The terminology thus differs from US schools.

Reporting for Duty! Schools in Haiti started early this year, a month earlier than 2025 and taking many by surprise. The amazing teachers and staff at the 11 St. Francis schools pulled together and pulled it off! Most schools were able to begin yesterday, 7 September as prescribed. We'll be sharing many photos of this exciting and hopeful time. May God bless Haiti's students this year.

Last week was a busy time for the parish of St. Francis on La Gonâve. In addition to a big Teacher Training seminar, an intensive music camp was held for middle & high school students, organized by staff of the esteemed St Trinité music school. A final recital was held for parents Sunday. Students in the schools have amazing opportunities!

Teacher Training 2026 is a success! This past week, 92 teachers and principals from St. Francis Parish' 10 primary schools attended a 3-day seminar for updates on curriculum changes and to practice teaching techniques. Specialty instructors from the mainland traveled at great peril to teach and the island's official of the Ministry of Education, Mr. Fodnel Francois presented. This dedication to EXCELLENCE is what sets St. Francis schools apart!

On the island of La Gonâve, using multiple sources of energy is a necessity. This week Mr. Blan and Mr. Tété worked to create charcoal from a junk wood called bayawonn. This takes considerable skill and experience. Here they produce charcoal over slow burn ground pits, on parish property near the airport. Charcoal is a vital resource for cooking because it provides a long burn. The school system of St. Francis will require a lot of charcoal in the upcoming school year for school lunches!
