On the island of La Gonâve, using multiple sources of energy is a necessity. This week Mr. Blan and Mr. Tété worked to create charcoal from a junk wood called bayawonn. This takes considerable skill and experience. Here they produce charcoal over slow burn ground pits, on parish property near the airport. Charcoal is a vital resource for cooking because it provides a long burn. The school system of St. Francis will require a lot of charcoal in the upcoming school year for school lunches!

In the community of Plaine Mapou, St. Jean Baptiste is hosting a 3 day/week camp for kids August 3- 20 with cultural and academic activities and outdoor games. Thanks to requested investments by partner St. Philips Church of Charleston SC, the campus has a beautiful new perimeter fence and gate to address security and erosion issues. A guardian hut is also under construction. It's hoped that these improvements will increase enrollment in the primary school and instill confidence in families that the school is secure and the futbol field is smooth!

Today we celebrate Rev. Father Jean Madoche Vil on the occasion of 24 years of ordination as an Episcopal priest; 14 of these years have been assigned to serve as Priest in Charge of St. Francis parish on the island of la Gonâve. Father Vil is a visionary leader who serves as a model of compassion, dignity, good humor, hope and wisdom. He is in the middle of everything, demonstrating that a follower of Jesus works with his hands, his heart and his mind. Père Vil, thank you for making this world better!

The Bill Rice Community Health Center staff hold mobile clinics in outlying communities at least once a week; they create a temporary site for patient exams and teaching in a primary school classroom. This week we received photos from a mother and child clinic held in the big clinic building in Nouvelle Cité; it includes a lab and pharmacy. Costs for mobile clinics have increased with the cost of fuel for the motorcycle and Toyota Landcruiser.
