Wow, were glad people are as excited about coyotes as we are! The room (and the parking lot) was packed!

A huge thank you to Chris Mowry from Atlanta Coyote Project, make sure to check them out on their website at https://www.atlantacoyoteproject.org/

Community members came together to learn about the wild world of this underrated, beautiful animal. Visitors stuck around after to ask more questions, to find out how to support our wildlife, and to talk with other guests about all that we learned.

Second Saturday Safaris occur monthly at Blue Heron. We meet on the Preserve on Saturday morning and invite an expert to share some of their knowledge with us. Next months theme is Trees of the Preserve, with the Atlanta Tree Foundation!

🦋The Southeast Pollinator Count is almost here, and Blue Heron is proud to host an observation site in our very own community garden! We need citizen scientists like you 🫵 on the ground collecting data for the yearly census.🐝

On August 21st and 22nd, environmental stewards in Georgia, the Carolinas, Florida, Alabama, and Mississippi volunteer to aid this crucial effort in better understanding our pollinator populations.

Even if you can't join us on the preserve, you can still participate at home! Just fifteen minutes in the sunshine can have a big impact. We're excited to see everyone there!

And that’s a wrap on Summer Camp 2026!

Where’d all the time go? We made some pretty unforgettable memories this year. We made friends, built sand castles, forged alliances in forts, and crafted masterpieces. Most of all, we discovered the beauty and wonder that makes up our natural world. We also discovered a lot of critters. Sooooo many critters. So many. One of our campers broke what we believe is the world record for the amount of snails on one hand (pictured above). We’ll be contacting Guinness Books soon.

We’re sad to say goodbye but we’re happy we’ll take the memories with us.
Come play with us again in the Fall! Our Fall Break Camps open for registration August 26th, and we have slots for school break, election day, and thanksgiving week!

All hands on deck! Join us August 1st to restore our meadow habitats and reintroduce native flora to our Piedmont Prairies! 🌻 We'll meet at 9:00am at the main building and be out until noon, pulling out invasives, planting shoots, and cleaning up our flower beds.

All tools, gloves, and water is provided! We'll have disposable cups, but please bring a refillable water bottle to ensure you stay hydrated. Parking is also free, our address is 4055 Roswell Rd, Atlanta, GA 30342.

🌞 June Wrap-up!

We exercised our creativity during Week 2, Art in Nature, where we painted garden rocks, made magical wands, and used our native animals as inspiration for paper critter crafts 🎨

During Week 3, Wildlife Investigators, Mr. Nark and his animal ambassadors stopped by to educate and inform our campers all about snakes, turtles, frogs, bugs, and toads! We even got to (gently!) pet a rock iguana 🪲

In the last week of June, Creek Week returned for the Creequel! We waded through Nancy Creeks shallow waters to cool off from the hot sun 🌊

Camp has been amazing so far! We're so excited for the last three themed weeks, and our Survival Skills Program throughout July 🏕️ Here's to another great camp season!

🔍Look closer! That's not a firefly, that's a Pale Bordered Field Roach (Pseudomops)! 🪳

These little mimics are native to Georgia, and disguise themselves as lightning bugs, which are toxic to predators. Though these bugs are far from popular, the 44 subspecies of Pseudomops Roaches are by far the most pretty.

Junior environmental stewards to the front 🙂‍↕️Our campers 'Clam Cleanup Crew' pulled out dozens of invasive freshwater clams from the creek!

The Asian Gold Clam, or Corbicula fluminea is a species that originates from East Asia. These clams hitched a ride on industrial shipping boats, and unfortunately now can be found all throughout North and South America. If you've ever walked by a creek bed or in the woods and found small, yellowish-brown shells, it's more than likely it was a Gold Clam. They're resilient, and impact our waterways and native benthic's very negatively. They remove huge swathes of phytoplankton biomass (a key food source for other species), they unbalance concentrations of nitrogen and phosphorous in the water, and profoundly influence the dynamics of our aquatic communities

All that to say, these campers did a wonderful job for our creek and had a great time doing it. One of our campers found a group of clams in the shallow water, and before you could blink a clam removal squad was assembled. Some were taken back to home aquariums, some will be fed to a campers chickens, and a select few will be participating in a "Grow the Biggest Clam" Contest! The goal is to get one to at least an inch, but the largest overall wins! Big thank you to our young stewards! These campers are the biologists of the future 🌿
