You could say we've had lovely weather for ducks lately... 🌧️ 🦆

One of our most distinguished looking ducks in Georgia is the Wood Duck. These colorful ducks live in wooded swamps and nest in tree cavities near water. Shortly after hatching, ducklings make an incredible jump from nest to ground (sometimes from heights of 50+ feet) without injury!

Wood Ducks experienced serious declines in the late 19th century due to overhunting and habitat loss, but conservation efforts, habitat protection, and the widespread use of nest boxes have helped the species recover.

Our Beak of the Week belongs to... a Red-tailed Hawk!

Red-tailed Hawks sport that signature raptor beak: curved and sharp for tearing apart prey.

This one might've been easier to identify by the tail than the beak! Who wants credit for guessing "hawk" ?

Love hummingbirds? Then you won't want to miss Birds Georgia's trip to Arizona this August!

We'll endeavor to see as many as TEN species of hummingbirds, including Anna's Hummingbird, Broad-tailed Hummingbird, Rivoli's Hummingbird, Black-chinned Hummingbird, and Broad-billed Hummingbird.

Worried about the weather? 🥵 Don't be! Most of our birding will take place during the cooler morning hours, and higher elevations offer relief from the desert temperatures (plus, we'll have the occasional monsoon rains to cool things off!).

This trip runs August 25 to 31, with arrival and departure through Tucson.

Space is limited so reserve your spot today at the link in the comments! ➡️

Join us at Manuel's Tavern on Sunday, June 28, at 3:30 PM for a Birds Georgia membership meeting featuring guest speaker Dr. Michelle Moyer of Georgia College & State University!

Dr. Moyer’s research explores avian ecology, bioacoustics, bird conservation, and even female bird song. Her team’s latest work focuses on the migratory behavior of the Prothonotary Warbler, a brilliant yellow songbird often found in Georgia’s swampy forests during the summer months.

Where do these warblers spend the non-breeding season? And what conservation challenges are contributing to their decline across Georgia and beyond? Join us to learn more about the fascinating research helping answer these questions.
